Autumn Comes to the Buckeye State, 2001

Autumn of 2000 was the first time I've had the chance to shoot trains in the fall colors. Fortunately, a relatively easy semester at school gave me ample time to head trackside. I certainly enjoyed it.

Wheeling and Lake Erie Ore Trains

Westbound train 341 cuts through the early morning fog near Smithfield Station.
Eastbound train 340 rolls along the WLE/OHCR Joint Line.
Cows in a farmer's field are undisturbed by 340's passing.
At Pittsburgh Junction, loads of ore head east on the Wheeling mainline to Mingo Junction.
On a remote stretch of the line, a light engine set drifts west between the tunnels at MP 101.
Nearing its destination, MRL-led 340 soars above McIntyre Creek.
Viewed from the Ohio River Bridge at Mingo Junction, 340 is about to swing off the mainline and into the yard to deliver its load to Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel.
