When the old Southern Pacific back shops were demolished, the shop whistle on the power plant was saved and re-installed on the roof of the Union Station at the north end. It was set to blow every day at noon but the old air compressor gave out and it was silent for several years. Recent efforts by Steve Jones, Doug Clark and others including monetary donations from several businesses and individuals, a new compressor was purchased and installed. Below is an interview with R&LHS member Richard Carroll who used to work in the SP Shops and tells us a little history of the whistle.



An extension was made to the whistle in order to clear the air conditioner unit
so the sound could travel better.
