Warrenton, Virginia, home of the Piedmont Railroaders, is located approximately 40 miles west of Washington, DC. Though no longer directly served by rail, Warrenton at one time was the western end of the Norfolk Southern's CW Branch which connects to the mainline at Calverton, VA. The branch now only reaches as far as Casanova, VA; the site of a rock quarry.
The greater Washington area is served by two mainline freight railroads, Norfolk Southern and CSX; and three passenger railroads, Amtrak, Virginia Railway Express (VRE), and Maryland Rail Commuter (MARC).
