December 20, 2011

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

Members enjoyed the holiday social. No business was conducted.

Attendees participated in a pub quiz after the social hour.


November 15, 2011

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by President Gordy Bjoraker at 8:10 p.m. Attendance was 32.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the previous meeting. He reported on the chapter picnic.

Jay Creswell gave the treasurer's report, detailing the previous month's expenses.

Members were reminded about the plans for the holiday social in December.

The meeting adjourned about 8:25 p.m.

After the intermission, members enjoyed Bill Kalkman's program of slides from his recent travels across the USA.


October 18, 2011

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by President Gordy Bjoraker at 8:05 p.m. Attendance was 29.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the previous meeting. He reported on the chapter picnic.

Jay Creswell gave the treasurer's report, detailing the previous month's expenses.

Rick Davidson said that members should receive their renewal notices soon.

John Morris reported that the nomination committee had assembled a slate of norminees for the coming year, which was:

There were no nominations from the floor. Members passed a motion to elect the slate as proposed by acclamation.

The meeting adjourned about 8:22 p.m.

Stephen Sery has posted a video on YouTube about the freight which had mechanical problems during the chapter picnic. The video is titled Incident at Gaithersburg.

After the intermission, members enjoyed a screening of The Great Locomotive Chase.


September 20, 2011

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by President Gordy Bjoraker at 8:10 p.m. Attendance was 33.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the previous meeting. Bill reminded members about the upcoming picnic.

John Morris reported on the progress of the nominating committee.

The meeting adjourned about 8:25 p.m.

Jim Mixter said that Amtrak would be operating a dome car on the Cardinal during October.

Paul Bergdolt reported that a former Pennsylvania Railroad 44-ton locomotive had been delivered to the Walkersville Southern.

After intermission, Jim Kleeman presented a multi-media show with music and narration that looked at Montana railroading 1993-2007.


August 16, 2011

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by Secretary Bill Holdsworth at 8:10 p.m. Attendance was 27.

Members dispensed with reading of the minutes.

Jay Creswell gave the treasurer's report, detailing the previous month's expenses.

Jay reminded members about the chapter picnic September 24. Organizers are looking for a volunteer to bring an extra charcoal grill.

Bill solicited a volunteer for the bylaw revision committee. Changes in the national organization's structure require changes in the chapter bylaws.

John Morris and Bennett Lichtman agreed to serve as the nominating committee.

The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

Before intermission, Jim Mixter presented a video about Cincinnati Union Terminal

After intermission, Dick Wiersema presented a slide program featuring railroading in the Cincinnati area in the 1950s. The program included steam around Cincinnati Union Terminal and Winton Place, and early diesels. Dick's program also featured some rare scenes of the long abandoned Frankfort and Cincinnati Railroad.

June 14, 2011

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by President Gordy Bjoraker at 8:09 p.m. Attendance was 25.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the May meeting.

Jay Creswell gave the treasurer's report, detailing the previous month's expenses. He said newsletter costs were reduced because Clay Moritz found a printer with lower prices.

Gordy and Jay reminded members about the proposed bylaw changes for the national organization. They urged members to submit their proxies soon, to ensure they are received in time for the vote at the national convention.

The meeting adjourned at 8:27 p.m.

Other Notes from the Meeting

Jay reported that Vienna will have a speaker on railroads during the Civil War June 17. The event is part of the town's commemoration of “Battle of Vienna" in June 1861.

Carl Franz said that the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad has started a program which will allow members of the public to purchase the opportunity to run a locomotive.

Jay reported that new safety rules from the FRA contain an exemption the will allow Cass Scenic Railroad to keep its lumber cars in service.

After the intermission, John Sery presented a video program on the transformation of an old GP-9 locomotive into a new GenSet model.


May 10, 2011

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

Officers present: Gordy Bjoraker, President
Jay Creswell, Treasurer

The meeting was called to order by President Bjoraker at 8:04 pm. Thirty five members and guests were present.

Reading of the minutes of the April meeting was skipped because of the absence of the Secretary.

Jay Creswell gave the Treasurer’s report.

Jay noted that ballots for the National organization’s meeting had been sent out. He urged members to vote since the reorganization of the National’s structure is one of the more important developments at National in many years.

There being no other business, the formal part of the meeting concluded with rail news.

On June 18, Vienna VA will have a reenactment of the “Battle” of Vienna in June 1861, which involved a Union troop train and Confederates attempting to cut the line. The event will include a replica Civil War era locomotive.

Paul Bergdolt reported on planned events on the Walkersville Southern for their coming season.

Maryland will receive $22 million in federal funds for preliminary engineering and environmental studies to replace the Amtrak bridge over the Susquehanna River.

Carl Franz reported that the lumber cars on the Cass Scenic Railroad may soon be taken out of service because of new FRA safety regulations, unless a waiver can be obtained.

The business meeting adjourned at 8:24 p.m.

Following a short break, Ken Lehman presented a slide program on the CSX (formerly B&O) main line from Point of Rocks to Cumberland during 1984 to 1994.

Jay reported that the town of Vienna is planning a 150th anniversary celebration of the Battle of Vienna June 18. They would welcome some ideas on how to highlight the railroad's significance in the event.
