Minutes of the 2020 Membership Meetings

Potomac Chapter, National Railway Historical Society, Inc

December 15, 2020

The chapter met using Zoom video conferencing software. Participation peaked at 24 Zoom logins. Secretary Bill Holdsworth called the meeting to order about 8:05 p.m.

President Gordy Bjoraker updated the group on the donations made under the chapter's small grants program. Because of the pandemic, we made more donations than usual.

Bill presented a brief, three-question quiz, as a nod to the pub quiz that is usually part of the December holiday social.

Alex Mayes showed a program cover some of the major events of 2019, including the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad, the NRHS convention in Salt Lake City, and a UP Big Boy No. 4014 trip from Echo Canyon, Utah to Wamsutter, Wyoming.

A discussion followed the program.

The meeting ended about 9:30 p.m..

November 17, 2020

The chapter met using Zoom video conferencing software. Participation peaked at 26 Zoom logins. Secretary Bill Holdsworth called the meeting to order at 8:06 p.m.

Because of the pandemic, the Board of Directors acted as the nominating committee for this year's election. They proposed the following slate of candidates:

Members passed a motion to elect the proposed slate by acclamation.

George Hamlin showed a program entitled Trains ... A less locomotive-centric look at railroad photography.

A discussion followed the program.

The meeting ended about 10 p.m..

October 21, 2020

The chapter met using Zoom video conferencing software. About 26 people participated using 26 Zoom logins. Secretary Bill Holdsworth called the meeting to order at 8:03 p.m.

Bill reminded the group about Wednesday afternoon's train-watching session at Gaithersburg.

No business was conducted during the meeting.

Ira Silverman showed a program about Union Pacific railroading in the 1960s and 1970s.

After the program, Bill tested using the Zoom breakout feature to conduct a pub quiz. The experiment wasn't successful.

The meeting ended about 9:45 p.m.

September 15, 2020

The chapter met using Zoom video conferencing software. About 23 people participated using 21 Zoom logins. Secretary Bill Holdsworth called the meeting to order at 8:01 p.m.

No business was conducted during the meeting.

Jim Kleeman showed a program about railroading in the Upper Midwest, featuring his trips to Minnesota and the Dakotas.

After the program, members discussed having a train watching session at Alexandria Union Station about 3 p.m. on September 29. Bill said he would contact Clay to have him issue a broadcast email to the membership.

The meeting ended about 9:30 p.m.

August 18, 2020

The chapter met using Zoom video conferencing software. About 21 people participated using 19 Zoom logins. Secretary Bill Holdsworth called the meeting to order at 8:01 p.m.

No business was conducted during the meeting.

Alex Mayes showed a program about UP steam engine #4014, the same program that had to be aborted in July.

The meeting ended about 9:30 p.m.

July 21, 2020

The chapter met using Zoom video conferencing software. Some 18 people participated. Secretary Bill Holdsworth called the meeting to order at 8:07 p.m.

Members approved a motion to appoint Penny Dixon-Gumm to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Gordon Piscacek.

The business portion of the meeting ended at 8:12 p.m.

Alex Mayes started showing a program about UP steam engine #4014 before thunderstorms knocked him offline and it became impossible to continue the program.

The meeting ended at 8:37 p.m.

June 16, 2020

The chapter met using Zoom video conferencing software. Ira Silverman showed a program celebrating the 50th anniversary of the merger creating the Burlington Northern Railroad.

Jay announced that the chapter's banquet has been rescheduled for September 26.

No official business was conducted at the meeting.

Some 30 people participated in the meeting, using 28 Zoom logins. Participants included Bennett Lichtman, Paul Bergdolt, David Squires, Penny Dixon-Gumm, Robert Dixon-Gumm, Doug Callan, Tom Panfil, Jim Kleeman, Rudy Volin, John Hayman, Jay Creswell, Bob Newton, Gordon Bjoraker, Alex Mayes, Teresa Renner, Doug Scott, Rick Davidson, Ted Xakellis, Carl Franz, Bart Pulverman, Ira Silverman, Jim Mixter, James Dent, Bill Holdsworth, Stephen Sery, and John Sery.

Others identified by their Zoom ID were Moto Z, Pete, William’s I Pad, and MC’s I Pad.

March, April, and May meetings

These meetings were cancelled because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

February 18, 2020

Montgomery County Executive Office Building

The meeting was called to order by President Gordy Bjoraker at 8:11 p.m. Attendance was 19.

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the January meeting.

Jay Creswell gave the treasurer's report, summarizing month-end balances.

Jay urged members to sign up for the March 21 lunchtime banquet. Kevin Keefe will be the speaker

Meeting adjourned about 8:25 p.m.

Other Notes from the Meeting

Members discussed the recent announcement concerning plans to re-open the East Broad Top Railroad.

After the intermission members enjoyed a DVD with footage taken by the New York Central Railroad's filmmaker.

January 21, 2020

Bill Holdsworth read the minutes of the November meeting.

Jay Creswell gave the treasurer's report, summarizing December expenses.

Carl Franz reminded members that Kevin Keefe will be the speaker at the March 21 banquet.

Meeting adjourned about 8:25 p.m.
