Greetings From Altoona.....A Postcard History "
In
April 1999, Andy Mulhollen
proposed to publish an Altoona retrospective in connection with
Altoona's Sesquicentennial. He indicated that the project could
act as a fund raiser for the Chapter. The project was to be the
publication of a booklet, approximating 30 pages, containing
antique post card views of the PRR and Altoona. This would
include the Altoona & Logan Valley
Electric Railway.
Although
published in connection with the Sesquicentennial of Altoona, the
publication will be broad enough to merit sales for an extended
period of time. Andy reviewed cost estimates to include
scanning, all fees, and contracting with publisher. The
expected retail price was $10 per copy. David Seidel then reviewed
other cost proposals from the "instant print" community,
which proved cost prohibitive. The source material came from the
collections of Andy Mulhollen,
David Seidel, & Leonard
Alwine for the benefit of the Chapter. A motion to proceed
with the project was made by Dick Charlesworth and seconded by
Greg Miller. Karin Givler suggested marketing at various
sesquicentennial events with all members sharing this activity/responsibility.
The motion passed.
Andy Mulhollen showed a sample
of the booklet to members who attended the July 1999 meeting and
asked for suggestions or ideas. By the end of August 1999, it was
reported that everything was on its way to the printer's. He
expects the (1500) books to be done the last week of September,
just in time for Altoona Railfest '99.
The book was titled "A Postcard History of Altoona" and features a postcard which has a photo of Altoona and the words "Greetings from Altoona". The book made it debut at a booth set up at Altoona Railfest '99. Discussion is underway to attempt to have the booklets placed for sale in the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum Gift Shop. It is also available from the gift shop area of this web page.
