Built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division in September 1952 as an SW9 for the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad and numbered 8957. Later renumbered by the P&LE to 1238. Acquired by Granite City Steel in 1974 and retaining the number 1238. Amtrak acquired it from Granite City Steel and numbered it 797, named it "Luke" and designated it as an SW1000R. In July 2015, National Railway Equipment rebuilt it into a 2GS12B low-emissions Genset locomotive and it was renumbered 597.
