Amtrak's GE P40DC Roster Photos


GENERAL: Amtrak's first Genesis Series unit built by General Electric Transportation Systems in Erie, Pennsylvania. These units first went into service in early 1993 on Long-Distance trains across Amtrak's System.
SPECS: Equipped with a 4000 horsepower prime mover and DC Traction Motors, these were the first locomotives of their kind for Amtrak. Several have been upgraded partially to P42DC Standards.
TERRITORY: These units originally were used nationwide however since Amtrak no longer handles the Mail & Express business that warranted the need for more power on it's trains (likely part of the reason it ordered 207 P42's), it found itself with excess power. That said, most of these units are now in storage with some having been sold off with a few leased by other railroads.
NOTES: Amtrak received 1 order of these units #800-843. They were originally delivered in the Phase III Paint Scheme that fades to gray as the stripes go to the back of the unit. They have been given several names in the railroad community including "AMD-103" meaing Amtrak Locomotive capable of 103mph, as well as being known as a Genesis Unit which is GE's designation for these units.
