Sandusky To Cleveland, Ohio On Amtrak's Pennsylvanian
Thursday, October 11th, 2001 - Continued From Page #1

Having just arrived in Cleveland is Amtrak's Pennsylvanian seen here on the platform.
Shortly after I got off my train, this NS Freight passed by the station with a former Conrail SD60I #6759 on the lead. Right after I photographed the above freight, I made the short 5 minute walk over to the Rock Hall and the photo you saw at the beginning of this travelogue was taken when I got there. I did however know that you can't bring in any cameras to the museum so I actually photographed the building, then walked back to the Amtrak Station and checked my camera bag at the baggage counter for $1.50. Amtrak held on to it for me for the duration of my stopover here. I will say that the museum is a must for anyone who has any interest in music. The displays and interactive exhibits are great and your admission to the museum is valid for that entire day so if you want to quit for awhile to have lunch then head back, that's OK. I also took as you'll see in the photos below, some pictures of the area of Cleveland around the Rock Hall, if there's one thing Cleveland has, its a nice skyline, shown below are 2 photos taken of areas around the Rock Hall...

And Finally after touring the Rock Hall and heading over to Tower City for lunch at Arby's, I got back to the Amtrak Station to find my train, #43, the Pennsylvanian arriving 18 minutes EARLY!!! At 5:44pm, it arrived with P42 #12 on the lead, this was rather shocking but I guess there is some more padding in the schedule that can allow for such an early arrival. The train did sit on the platform and a "smoke break" was granted to passengers who wanted to light up a cigarette while the time past so that the train would depart on time, which it did at 6:07pm. I rode in another Horizon Fleet Coach #54510 and just before we left Cleveland, the passenger who sat across from me boarded and had what looked like an oversized duffle bag. I offered to place it in the overhead compartment for her, it must have weighed nearly 50 pounds or more!!! After that, we had a nice conversation for the entire hour I was on the train, she told me she was a college student in Cleveland who was headed home for the weekend to see her parents in Indiana. So we chatted and the time flew by, so by the time we arrived in Sandusky, I said goodbye to her, and got off the train only to find it nearly dusk outside and the rain was just about here! I attempted to walk back to my dorm, a good 5 miles from the station but knew after less than 1 mile that that was out of the question, it started raining pretty good so a quick call to the Sandusky City Service Taxi, was all I needed to do to get back home.
Overall, another excellent Amtrak Trip, the crew onboard was friendly and did a fine job of running this train with no problems at all on either train I rode. Amtrak's web site is super easy to use and you can find some amazing deals there if you know where to look and your willing to book in advance. On a side note, I booked another ticket through their web site for Train #48, the Lake Shore Limited on October 29th, once again, I got a super cheap fare for booking in advance and taking advantage of Amtrak's special offers. Until next time, Happy Railfanning...
