Organizational History:

The Company acquired the Toledo, Ann Arbor & North Michigan at foreclosure, the Toledo to Frankfort line in Oct. 14, 1895, both the Escanaba, Frankfort & Southeastern line, Oct. 15, 1895, and the Ithaca & Alma, 1897. It gained control of the Menominee & St. Paul, 1899, and the Manistique & Lake Superior, 1911. The Company controlled the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton, 1905-1910. The Company declared bankruptcy on Oct. 14, 1973.  Part of the Company was sold to the state of Michigan and Grand Trunk Western in 1976. Later, the remaining parts of the Company were sold to the state of Michigan in 1980 and 1987. The properties operated by the Michigan Interstate are called the Ann Arbor Railroad System. (For more information, see Michigan Railroads & Railroad Companies by Graydon Meints.)

Concerning the Company's car-ferry business, a Wisconsin Historical Marker in part reads, "The Ann Arbor car-ferry began service from Kewaunee, Green Bay & Western Railroad ferry slip No. 1 loaded 22 cars of flour from Minneapolis, destined for England, Scotland, and Ireland, the first boat load of box cars to be transported across Lake Michigan - a service later extended to other ports." (For more information on the car-ferry service see Rails Across the Water: the Story of Ann Arbor Car Ferries by Stephen Elve.)

The Clarke Historical Library has a number of books about the history of Michigan Railroads and the Company, as well as published Company Annual reports, 1900-1928 (scattered).

Scope and Content Notes:

The collection consists of miscellaneous records of the company, including administrative correspondence, bulletins and circulars, reports, printed materials, personnel, and financial records of the railroad and its ferry line. Specific ferries documented in the collection include, the Arthur K. Atkinson, Ferry #3, and the M.V. Viking. Many of the records came from the line's former Marine Operations headquarters in Frankfort (Mich.). The records are incomplete and do not document the entire history of the Company.

Later owners of the Company, according to rumors, destroyed some corporate records.

Published Annual Reports for 6/30/1913-6/30/1916 and 12/31/1917-12/31/1927 (1v.); 12/31/1928-12/31/1942 (1v.); and 1943, 1945-1950, 1956, and 1961 (1v. each year) are on DEPOSIT and have been cataloged with other annual reports, which were not donated.

MOLD ALERT!

Most of the collection was severely contaminated with mold when it was deposited at the Clarke.  Processing was delayed until fumigation could occur. Those boxes were fumigated in Skokie (Ill.) in summer 1999. Other, later donations do not appear to be severely contaminated with mold, but patrons should be careful when using these collections.
