The Arthur K. Atkinson was towed from Ludington to DeTour, Michigan, at
the very east end of the upper peninsula, in Novenber of 2003 by its new
private owner. It is moored at the old city coal docks, about 1 mile
northwest of town. The area is private property and permission should
be obtained from the caretaker if you wish to photograph her. The boat
was chartered as a yacht for the journey, which made it the biggest
yacht on the Great Lakes, and probably in the nation! Apparently by
chartering it that way, the owner was able to avoid many coast guard
regulations on commercial vessels. The owner has declared that he
intends to conduct tire recycling aboard, but no work has been done to
prepare the car deck for such a venture as of the end of May, 2004.

While the outer hull and superstructure has a great deal of surface rust
on it, the interior, including the bilge area, was in dry and clean
condition when inspected last in 2002. The boat also had new engines
installed in 1981 or 82, just a year before it ceased operations, so it
may be in decent shape for use.
