Ann Arbor Railroad 1100 - 1149 series Box cars

Ann Arbor Railroad 1100 - 1149 series Box cars

Originally Wabash series 23000-24000, consisting of two groups of similar cars built in 1922 and 1923.  Cars 23000-23749 were built in January by ACF [American Car and Foundry].  Cars 23750-24499 were built by Pullman Car Company.  They were originally double sheathed automobile boxcars with ten foot door opening, with a six foot and a four foot door to the left.  1929 - 500 cars were convered from the 23000-24499 series to single door class XM and renumbered to Wabash 81000-81499 series.  In 1934 another group of the 23000 series with steel sides, Murphy paneled roof, and six foot Youngstown steel door, retaining Murphy ends and Vulcan trucks.  These cars were Numbered into the Wbash 82000-82512 series.  From 1946 through 1950 random cars in the Wabash 82000-82512 series were equipped with engine racks.  These cars were re-numbered into the 82513-82513, 82850-82999, and 81900-81999 series.  Cars not receiving engine racks remained in the 82000-82512 series.  Engine racks were mostly removed by mid 1950's and returned to general service cars.  The Ann Arbor purchased 50 cars from the above series on 6/15/1954, none having engine racks.
