Vernon Freight Station Closes

VERNON – The Vernon Ann Arbor Railroad depot, so old that records of its date of construction no longer exist, was officially closed here yesterday.

Railway officials say the action was taken in step with Ann Arbor's program to consolidate its freight service along its Ohio-Michigan line.

Vernon customers have been notified to deliver their freight to Durand where train service and rates will be the same as was offered at Vernon, the classified as non-telegraphic company says.

The Vernon depot was classified as non-telegraphic, used primary in a care-taking capacity. The station had not handled train orders, passenger service or mail for some years.

Its closing followed a 30-day period in which the public could register objections to its removal. None were received officials report.

The brick building is expected to be torn down. Dates painted on the walls of the freight room indicate the depot was in operation as early as 1890.

Peter Gaylord of Mesick,Mich., depot agent, will be transferred to another assignment with the company, it has been announced. Until May 31 of this year, Ms. John Swain, now retired in Vernon, was agent for 15 years.
