Ann Arbor settled down to operate its Kewaunee and Manitowoc lines, although it costs was steadily rising. From 1955 to 1973 ferries costs had risen 59%. Despite a lower crew counts, an annual loss of 2.23% of westbound traffic continued to sap the AA's strength. AA had risen to the challenge of post war passenger and auto tourist business by modernizing three of its boats: ARTHUR K. ATKINSON (1959), CITY OF GREEN BAY (1963), and VIKING (1965). The problem of scheduling for passengers' benefits plus the wily boxcar proved difficult. During the 1940's and 1950's, wages and benefits for ferry personnel raised significantly, offsetting any newly won traffic. After 1974 of two boats remained to handle business; the fast, diesel powered 21-MPH Viking and the 18-MPH ATKINSON.
