Beginning in 1914 the B&M, along with all railroads in the U.S., conducted a massive inventory and survey of its physical plant of the company as required by the Interstate Commerce Commission. The purpose of the survey was to determine an accurate valuation of the railroad's capital facilities in order to enable the Commission to set rates whereby railroads would be assured a reasonable rate of return on their capital assets.

Right of Way and Track Maps were originally prepared in 1914 in order to inventory the location of all tracks, buildings, bridges, culverts, signals, cattle passes, property boundaries, track fences, etc. for all railroad lines then operated by the B&M. These maps are all about 56" wide by 24" tall. They are highly detailed, drawn to a scale of 1" = 100 feet. Each map covers one mile or less of track. The maps show when and from whom land was acquired when the railroad line was originally built. Included are references to the location of deed documents in county land registry offices.

Copies can be made of the following valuation plans held in the B&MRRHS Archives. Please note "Available on CD" means that prints can be made from CD. Please email Rick Nowell, Archives Chairman at fnowell3@yahoo.com for details.

The Collection

The original list*** was compiled by Edward T. Levay, Jr.,

B&MRR Accounting Dept., in 1984, when plans were donated by

B&M Corp. to B&MRRHS, at the time when B&M removed its offices

from 150 Causeway St., Boston, to North Billerica. These

valuation plans were declared to be surplus by the B&M Corp.

See B&MRRHS Newsletter, Feb. 1984 pp. 3-4, for additional information

on this donation, and where this listing was first published [with

some typographical errors and omissions].

The original donation consisted of railroad lines that had been abandoned

or sold by the B&M prior to 1984, including lines in eastern

Massachusetts that had been sold to the MBTA. Plans for a few

abandoned/sold lines were not included in the donation, but most

were. Not included in the donation were railroad lines that were

still owned and actively operated by the B&M in 1984. Many of

these lines were subsequently abandoned or sold by B&M/Guilford

Transportation Industries, but there was no provision for

donation of these plans to the B&MRRHS subsequent to the

original donation in 1984.

The B&MRRHS has subsequently acquired copies of valuation plans

for other lines from other sources. Some of these have been

filed in the vertical file, others in the flat files.

***See RRC file named VALPLANS.WK1 (and Wordperfect file VALPLN1) showing

contents of original donation of plans to B&MRRHS by B&M Corp.

in 1984.
