Canadian
Pacific Railway (CP) began in 1881 when Canada's first Prime Minister,
Sir
John A. MacDonald, envisioned a railway to unite the country. In 1968
they became CP Rail, a name that would last until 1996, when the
Canadian Pacific name was reinstated. CP operates 14,000
route miles.
Canadian Pacific also held significant financial interests in the SOO
Line.
