Trains - Great Northern Railway

The Great Northern Railway was the northernmost of the railroads connecting Minnesota and the Pacific northwest. GN merged with NP, CB&Q, and SP&S forming BN in 1970. Much of GN's heritage has been preserved or is still in use today!



EMD SD45
GN 400 "Hustle Muscle" at Osceola, WI, 5/23/15.  400 was the 1st production SD45 built in 1966. It is owned & maintained in operating condition by the Minnesota Transportation Museum, in St Paul, MN.
EMD SD9
Signal: stop GN 598 at Reardon, WA, 9/17/25.  This is 1 of 2 GN SD-9's with dynamic brakes. GN 599 was on display in Skykomish, WA, for many years, but was acquired by the Inland Northwest Rail Museum in 2022 to supply missing parts to return their 598 to operation.  599 will recive a cosmetic restoration for display later.

GN 192 operating at Duluth, MN, 7/23/01.
EMD F45
GN 441 at Essex, MT, 8/27/09.  This is a shell in GN's short lived "Big Sky Blue" paint scheme of the late 1960's refitted for use as a rental cabin at the Isaak Walton Inn at Essex.

Van/Bus
GN van/bus displayed at Havre, MT, 11/08/06. It ferried passengers between Whitefish, MT, and Kalispell, MT.
