Kansas City Southern (KCS) is a Class-1 railroad operating 3130 miles of track in 10 central and southeastern states. KCS today has the shortest route between Kansas City and the Gulf of Mexico, serving the ports of Port Arthur, Texas, New Orleans and West Lake Charles, La. and Gulfport, Miss. KCS was featured in August 2003 TRAINS.

KCS 4051 at Joplin, MO, 4/21/08. This is one lucky locomotive!  It was #5 of  6 on a northbound  freight  into Joplin; the 6th locomotive and 33 cars left the tracks. Local railfans told me the #6 loco was "wheels up" in the ditch!
