Stack trains are a large part of the LA&SL traffic line-ups. Here is yet another LA bound stack seen here at Garfield, UT.

Slideshow Narration

Garfield siding lies between Kennecott's copper mining operation. While the pit is well south of here, much of the ore is shipped up to this part of the SLC valley and is processed here. While the railroad seems to have a diminished role in the daily operations of the worlds largest copper mine (ie much of the ore arrives at the smelter via conveyor belt rather than by train), it still provides some services as can be noted by the numerous tracks here. Many of these tracks lead into various sidings and support industries that surround the smelter. I really need to get out here in the morning and get a shot with the smelter in the background. It would make a bit more sense what the area looks like.
