The trestle of the ex-GBW at the Plover River is an interesting place in Whiting, Wisconsin. Looks like remote country, but you can drive a popular road to see it. Most railfans use a telephoto lens and get a broadside view.
Back in December, the river was barely starting to freeze on the edges. |
|
By the end of January, some of the Plover River is froze. |
.
.
This is the crossing at the Green Circle trail bridge,
which is on the original P-line ROW a quarter mile east of the GBW trestle.
.
The active ex-GBW track is in the trees on the horizon.
.
.
The back water of the river is froze over 5 inches thick.
I packed up tripods and pole on a sled and hiked to the trestle.
.
The switch jobs are still on a predictable schedule,
and after a half-hour wait
I catch a lone southbound CN backing from Point to Plover.
It helps that this area is still horn blowing country.
Only the main line trains have the whistle ban in Stevens Point.
I can hear them coming over a mile away,
and that gives me more patience to wait in 20 degree weather.
And it came out underexposed even at +2/3 stop. Dark day and contrasty snow.
| And a half hour later, the northbound from Plover is heading to the Whiting paper mill |
