Reports:

Dave Smukowski opened the general business meeting.

Jeff Young brought the samples of the club caps and shirts. The shirts are $26.00 the caps are $12.00. Contact
Jeff Young if you want to get one, or both of these items. They will be of the blue denim variety. You can order them in either long or short sleeves. In the event that you want to have your name on it, the price is $2.00 extra. After the initial order of 24 shirts, if you wish to have the logo on a shirt, different than, the one that the club has ordered, it can be done. The charge for this would be $8.00 per shirt and there would have to be a minimum of four items at a time. The whole idea of this project is so that when we are at public, model railroad activities, such as Trainfest & S-Fest, we will be recognizable as Badgerland club members. The order will be placed for these items before the next meeting. Order now.

The Art Doty Report followed. Art passed around flyers on various train shows, other train related, and non-train related events in the Mid-West.

The Modular Layout Plan for Trainfest must to be submitted very soon. There are various train clubs, that are being turned away from upcoming Trainfests, because of the condition of their layouts. The days of incomplete, ragtag, modules are over. There are so many clubs that want to show their wares, that all cannot be accommodated. Therefore the Trainfest committee can be more selective. If you plan on having a module at this years show, it must be at least 90% complete and have backdrops. (The club has the paint for the backdrops.) I have to know shortly after the May 7th meeting who will be participating with a completed, or nearly completed module. If you can't guarantee this,
don't commit. I will be sending the plan in soon. If it means that we have a smaller layout, I don't care, but it must be presentable. Call
Ron Schlicht
, but be sure. So far, I have one side S & S's 24ft., Dick Kloes's 16 ft. and the club's (2) 8 ft. sections, along with the club ends.

New products Jeff Madden gave us some information on new S-Helper products and 1/64 model cars. It appears that some cars are almost becoming collectibles.

Steve Jones & Norm Rutkowski gave us more information of the club's web site. The site has provided us with a great head start on 2000 Fall SFest.

Ron Schlicht will have more information on the S-Fest patch at the next meeting.

Glenn Sarlitto is preparing plans for modules which will recreate the Casey Jones crash. It is the 100th anniversary of this historic event. Glenn will try to have this ready for Trainfest. Glenn also gave us some general information on the typography and history of this event. There appeared to be a lot of interest in this project, hopefully it will be completed in the near future. (Just a thought. If it didn't fit into the module system in time, it would make an interesting static display.)

Jeff Young will be checking into a tax exempt status for the club. This won't save us a ton of money, but every little bit helps.

$@ #*%!&?:

Our last meeting was hosted by Brad Nelson. It's been some time since Brad has been able to host a meeting. You remember Brad's layout, the layout that was on a Model Railroader calendar, in National videos on great train layouts, the one that was in books on model railroading, the one that was in Classic Toy Trains. If you don't remember it, too bad, it's gone.
When you have a layout like Brad did, it's pretty hard to trash it and start all over again, but that's exactly what Brad did. This was the first opportunity that I've had to see his new layout. WOW ! It's not finished yet, but it is pretty spectacular already. He has a lot of different innovations than he had on the old layout. He again has blended American Flyer accessories into his layout. The layout is in the same room, but now runs around the outer walls. I'm not saying anything bad about Brad's prior layout, but this one is head and shoulders above it. This layout may not appear in CTT, simply because it's so much better than what they usually put in their magazine. Congratulations on a job well done. For those of you who didn't get a chance to see his layout there will be other opportunities. I'm sure that he will be on the layout tour for this

years Fall S-Fest. If he isn't, there will be a public lynching.

Ron's New Product

Report

I recently purchased an S Helper Service SW-I in the Milwaukee Road (what else) paint scheme, AC powered. This was one of those items that I knew just where it was going to be placed on my layout. Naturally it's on a small siding and it looks fantastic on the layout.

(When all else fails read the instructions.) It is suggested that for the break-in period, you run the engine for twenty minutes in the forward position and twenty minutes in reverse. I suppose if you want to run it reverse first, that's just because you are a bit backward to begin with. My engine runs just fine. The only problem that I have encountered is that I run on American Flyer track. That, in itself, is not a problem. I have American Flyer rerailer tracks in various areas of my layout. Something hangs up or creates a small drag, slowing down the engine. The slow down is minimal, but none the less noticeable. I will have to figure out the problem and rectify it.

The engine runs as a yard engine would, so if you want to run it ram speed, you will be disappointed. It runs at a prototypical speed for an engine of it's type. This is fine for me. I haven't tried to load down the engine with a lot of cars, so I don't know what it will pull. If the cars are not of the Flyer variety, I would say probably ten, twelve or more.

Now I will explain the difference between a purest and a toy train operator. The Milwaukee Road ran the engines with standard pilot handrails. I like the MU pilot handrails version better. I really don't plan on doing much switching. Therefore I am using the Flyer coupler for the rolling stock and a scale couple on the front of the engine. As Chuck Porter would say "It's my damn railroad and I'll run it the way I want to."

I really like this engine and if you are planning on purchasing one, you won't be disappointed, even if it's not The Milwaukee Road.

Until the next time. See Ya.
