Reports:

Dave Smilkowski opened the general business meeting. Dave thanked all of those who helped out at this years Fall S-Pest, particularly Katie and Roy Meissner. We can't forget the job that Mac McGrath did putting it all together. Our club has received many positive comments and letters from the other participating S-Fest sponsoring clubs. We greatly appreciate their comments and thank them for their assistance with this years event.

Dave also gave a brief report on some of the post S-Fest activities and general cleanup items.

Art Doty said that he did not have a report to give. This in itself is noteworthy.

Jeff Young gave the treasures report. Outgoing expenses are noted in the newsletters. All other figures are reported at the general meetings.

It is also the time of the year for our Christmas donations. The motion was passed, to once again send to the organizations, that we have in the past. Food For Families, Salvation Army and Toys For Tots.

A brief discussion followed on the planned model railroad layout for the Veteran's Center. This project is being headed up by Dave Koehier. It was decided that we will have to see a proposal and a firm list other participating sponsors, before we commit financially to this project.

Dick Kloes reported that a friend of model railroaders had recently passed away. Art Curren was an employee of Kalmbach Publishing for many years. He was

also a very innovative kit basher and wrote many articles for MR, CTT and Railroad Model Craftsman. He was in attendance at many of our swaps and gave clinics at many other shows, including past S-Fests. Dick gave reports on other model railroading activities in the area.

Ron Schlicht gave a report on this years Trainfest 2000. We had plenty of help for setup and plenty for breakdown. We still need help to man the outside of the layout on Saturdays and Sundays. We have already received our application for next years show which will be held November 10th & 11th.

Mad City Model Railroad Show will be held February 17 & 18. The difference this year, from other years, is that setup will be permitted on Friday, February 16 from noon to 10:00 PM. Please contact Ron Schlicht if you plan on attending. At the next meeting I will finalize the list of those making the trip. and will try to get as many passes as possible. I will be taxing the final list the following day.

The Election of Officers for the year 2001 took place. The election results are as follows:

Dave Smukowski

Vice President

Jeff Madden

I thought about a ton of election jokes for the newsletter, but I heard more than enough about this years democratic process. Our ballots were handled in a more professional manner, in spite of the beer stains.

With the potential of gaining more new members, we may have to visit our prerequisites for acceptance. We don't have to be fanatics for rules and parliamentary procedure, but we have to at least know who our members are. It used to be mandatory to attend a meeting before acceptance. This may not always be possible, however I never miss a meeting, and there are members that I have never met, and have no idea who they are. Maybe a sponsorship program, or a letter from the applicant, could suffice-in some instances.

That membership card that you receive each year, is more than just a another meaningless piece of paper. It acts as your dues paid receipt and can get you merchandise discounts at participating hobby shops such as Dreamers and Greenfield News and Hobby. In my case, within a year, I've gotten my dues back through the discounts. You also get into the BSG swap meets for free. In addition, you receive this humble newsletter a few times a year. Use the card. It's not American Express or Mastercard, but it's not as worthless as you think it is.

Chuck Porter gave a report on some new S Gauge products that will be released in the near future. He also mentioned that any of you that are interested in the club shirts and caps, we will address future orders the first thing in the Fall.

Art Doty said that he did not have a report to give, but he went back on his word, and reported on some events that he will be attending this Winter. A meeting without a report from Art Doty is a meeting that Art doesn't attend. I know that I'll pay for this comment. If he knows that he is going to miss a meeting, he will send a courier, Federal Express, the pony express, (which is actually his mail man), or just send Truman Garrett.

The meeting was adjourned. Another relatively short meeting, this amounts to two in a row.

"Editors Comments"

$@ #*%!&?:

Our last meeting was hosted by Roy Meissner. Actually the December meeting amounts to a Christmas party. This means Roy and his-wife were, more or less besieged upon. There was food everywhere including the front of Badgerland S Gangers' shirts. It appears to be a pure coincidence that this meeting is always has the highest attendance. This is also the day of the election of officers, and I'm sure that the patriotic duty of our members, has a lot to do with the turnout. But then there are members who will come running, at the sheer mentions of free bread crusts.

In the event some of you didn't notice, the last newsletter, was the first one that contained our new version of the club mascot, what ever his name is. In addition, in the event that you haven't noticed, this newsletter has somewhat of a new look. The newer look has nothing to do with cosmetics, it's just easier to edit. My Mac lisi has it's limitations.

Special Report:

Charles "Chuck" Zehner Jr. passed away Saturday, December 2, 2000. If you don't know who Chuck was, that was your misfortune. Not only was he the creator of PBS's Track Ahead, but a friend to all of those that he came in contact with. There is not an aspect of railroading that wasn't involved in. If you were a model railroader, an artist, an engineer, conductor, worked in a museum, or had anything to do with railed transportation, you probably met Chuck. He was also a fine modeler in his own respect. He specialized in number I gauge circuses. There will be many accolades given to him, I don't have the literary prowess to fully make my readers truly appreciate all that Chuck accomplished in his time with us. The main thing that I can say, is that he was a friend, a very special friend, a friend to me, a friend to all. He will be greatly missed.

More Fall S-Fest 2000 Info

Some of us who hosted an open house for the layout tour, are very appreciative of the feedback that we have received. The letters, the e-mails the phone calls are all just great. Our layouts are things to be shared, that's the fun of it all.

The demand for the 25th Annual SFest car highly exceeded our expectations. There were members who purchased more than one car. This was done for more than one reason. Some like to run a string of like cars, some purchased extras to help support our club. I purchased two cars, even though I only wanted one. Some of our members are going to give up some of their extra cars. We are compiling a list of those who ordered a car and had to be refunded. The list will be in the order that they were received. We are looking for people who only wanted one car, and the supply ran out. The cars will be sold at their original price. There will be no attempt at "gouging". The only charge will be for shipping. We feel sorry that

everyone could not get a car. We were unable to obtain more cars from the supplier.

Any member who has a desire to have the club purchase their extras for this purpose, please contact Roy Meissner. Roy is handling this task and is the keeper of the official list.

Changes:

None to report

Please send me your addresses at: rschlicht@ra.rockwell .corn The above is my work address. I do not have a home address.

Wanted:

The club needs the 15th Fall S-Fest patch to complete an archive set. This is the 1990 State-Line with an 0-6-0 Engine on it.
OK, I sounded like an idiot in the for sale column staling that we were selling the 15th patches. It was a typo error. It was right in the previous newsletter.

I only list items under "Wanted" for two or three newsletters.
Please contact me if you want a listing continued or it will be dropped.
The same goes for the "For Sale" column. Interested in swapping, mention it. (Train Related Items Only)

For Sale:

Nothing to report at this time.

Food for thought:

Our modular layout at Trainfest 2000 was the finest showing that we have ever had. "It can get better." There is plenty of room for improvement.

Badgerland's New
Product Report

I have been giving new product reports in the last few newsletters. They are always positive. The last report was on a 12 piece figure set made by Rail King, an M.T.H. product. Since they are S Gauge, I

felt that they would appeal to our members. There was the promise of a subsequent Set #2, which I was anxiously awaiting. Well, they arrived. Now I've purchased a lot of little people in my day, and I consider myself well versed in the subject. Set #2 should have been more, than just a different color. Turn a head, change an arm position, do anything, but don't pass off Set #l as the new Set #2. I can always modify them a little. Needless to say, this product was the first disappointing review, that I've done in this column.

The ties that bind

Model trains swap meet attracts
young, young-at-heart

Kevin Harnack /Freeman Staff

David Nitsch of Plymouth looks over some of the trains he has for sale while his 4-year-old son, Grayson, sits on his lap during the Badgerland S Gaugers Train Trade Show at the Waukesha County Expo Center on Sunday. The group, which meets several times a year, is celebrating its 25th year.

By BRIAN HUBER Freeman Staff

WAUKESHA - When Nashotah's Kevin Laabs was a boy, his parents bought an American Flyer model train set for his brother.
Through the years, the train set has grown, getting frequent additions to the point where it now covers two large tables in Laabs' basement when it is assembled for the holiday season and winter months. Now. Laabs' son, Christopher. 7. is learning to appreciate the train set as he runs the controls, and the train is taking on precious cargo.

"It's a collector's item," Laabs said. "It was my older brother's, it got handed to me and now I am getting him interested in it"
Laabs and his son were among the dozens of mode] railroad enthusiasts who were al] aboard for a swap meet held at the 4-H Forum on the county fa irgrounds Sunday. The Badgerland S Gangers Train Trade Show takes place almost monthly from September through April, providing hobbyists with a chance to find everything they need. from tracks lo switches, landscaping pieces to model light poles.
Vendors covered ¹ tables with

merchandise, which organizer Dick Kloes said was larger than the average turnout. Kloes said the swap meets began 23 years ago as a way for hobbyists to sell excess parts and swap with other modelers; but it has grown to where many dealers are selling more and more new items.
Proceeds from the meet will go for the club to help area charities and promote its S scale. Model railroads are organized into several scales depending on the size of the track. Lionel trains run on an 0 gauge. Smaller HO-gauge trains are also popular. But the S scale of the American

Flyer is harder to Find.
Laabs said he went years without finding parts for his train set before model train shows began springing up.
"That's where you get the small things you need. like light bulbs or whatever." said Dick Kruger. of Cambridge. Kruger was at the swap meet to find parts for his Lionel train - "the only kind." he said - which he received as a Christmas present from his parents in 1928. .
Kruger said he has had to rewire the train because of weakening rubber insulation on the wiring, and sought help from the manufacturer. He also looks to

buy older cars he can cannibalize for parts to keep his vintage prewar set running. "And it ain't cheap," he said. Milwaukeean Dick Lyon. 31, stopped by to peek at newer pieces and was looking to add to his model set, which he has had since boyhood. Lyon said he got into model railroads with his father when he was young, and plans on doing so with his children. Jennifer, 4, and Jake. 2. who for the First time will see the train set put together this year for the holidays, the beginnings of what Lyon hopes is a long road down the right track.

OBITUARIES

Zehner launched show on trains

Zehner

By AMY RABIDEAU SILVERS of the Journal Sentinel staff
Chuck Zehner was just a regular guy who loved trains and launched what would become a nationally syndicated television series.
The show is "Tracks Ahead," produced by Milwaukee Public Television and seen on WMVS/ WMVT (Channels 10/36) locally and more than 150 other stations nationwide.
Zehner died of a heart attack Saturday at his South Milwaukee home. He was 58 years old.
"When we were first going together, Chuck used to say he wouldn't be spending his time In the bars, but he would be spending time working on his trains," said his wife, Carol Zehner.
He worked on his own trains and more.
After organizing presentations for a model railroading club, he got the idea of using television to reach more people interested in trains. According to a Green Sheet story in The Milwaukee Journal, he took a training course in public access television at the former Viacom cable studio in Cudahy and started doing

"Just Tracks" segments about the hobby.
"What everybody thought "might be six or eight programs turned out to be 87," he said then. "We forgot to stop."
By that time, friends were encouraging Zehner to pitch his concept to an even broader market. Milwaukee Public Television officials liked the idea and signed on. The public television version began using a magazine format, expanding beyond model railroading to anything that had to do with trains.
That was in 1990, when the show was called "On Track." "They did the first programs," Carol said. "He was a host at that time — and nervous as all get out."
Zehner ended up doing less on-air work after the first year, but continued behind the scenes as senior producer.
"My kitchen table was his desk and the phone was right there," she said. "He would call people to see If the Channel 10 crew could come to film whatever."
A new season is in production, with executive producer and director David Baule filming in

Mexico. The season's 13 shows will begin to air during late fall of 2001, said Kay Tierney, publicist for Channels 10/36. Older programs continue to be aired.
Tom Dvorak, director of broadcasting for Milwaukee Public Television, credited Zehner for much of the show's appeal. "Chuck Zehner conceived the idea of "Tracks Ahead' and was a real asset to the series," be said. "He had an excellent knowledge of railroading in general and his passion for the subject transferred into the series." ; ' Zehner never gave up his day job at Hayes Brake Inc. In Mequon, where he worked, as inspector coordinator, Carol said.
And he never gave up playing with his own trains-his pride and joy was creating at 1934 Hagenbeck-Wallace circus layout, complete with animal acts, tents and replicas of real-life circus

performers.
"He would invite anyone to see it," she said. "He'd started the music up even before they went into the basement."
Zehner's enthusiasm made the television show happen, said Kevin Keefe, associate publisher of Trains magazine. Kalmbach Publishing Co., which publishes Trains and Model Railroader, began underwriting "Tracks Ahead" during the first season.
"Chuck never realized what he wanted to do was impossible, so he did it anyway," Keefe said.
"He's a great example of how a passionate enthusiast can get something done," he said. "He's Just a regular guy, but he became a celebrity in the railroad world."
Zehner is also survived by two sons, Michael, now serving with the U.S. Navy, and Aaron of Chicago, as well as a brother, Robert of Fox Point.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Molthen-Bell & Sons Funeral Home, 700 Milwaukee Ave., South Milwaukee. The funeral service will foliar. Masonic Lodge rituals will begin after the service.
