After the treasurers report Jeff Young brought up the subject of our annual charitable donations. A motion was made and passed to donate $100.00 to each of the following organizations: Food For Families, The Salvation Army and Toys For Tots.

Meeting Reports

Dave Smukowski opened the October BSG general meeting. There were no in lieu of"s this month. (There ain’t no such verbage as of’s.) In Lieu of not watching the, not Super-Bowl bound, Green Bay Packers, this month’s meeting had much a better attendance. The worst news in that fact is that we will have to listen to Illinois, Bear fan, BSG members who finally have a football team that they are not ashamed to talk about. Gloat, gloat, gloat, gloat, gloat. Go Wisconsin Badgers, how about the University of Illinois Football team. (He-He)

Dave also gave brief report on progress the Fall S Fest 2008 There is some early planning on the S Fest car. We will not be discussing it at general meetings at this point in time. Remember if you have any suggestions for the car, they should be accompanied either by a picture or a sample car.

Smokie also asked our members to spend a little time helping out with the modular layout at the CASG 2006 FSF.

Dick Kloes gave a swap meet report. In many newsletters your editor has mentioned that we are in need of swap meet door prizes. Dick Kloes has mentioned it at meetings and Jeff Young has pointed it out many times.

Apparently Gary Children is one of the few not sleeping through the BSG meetings or he is one of the few that actually read these newsletters. Thanks to Gary we have had some door prizes to give away. Gary also helps out at the swap meets setting up and taking down the layout and then mans the hall entry table collecting the admission. He manages to do this whenever he is not lending a hand to one of the many other organizations that he belongs to.

A discussion followed on the need to retain the Journal-Sentinel ad for our swap meets. Apparently there was no ad for the October meet. This ended up being perhaps the worst October meet that we have had. The ad is a necessary evil regardless of the cost. There were a few other issues regarding the swap that were discussed. None of those issues are worth repeating in this newsletter because we have talked about the same things over and over ad nauseum. In the past I have requested that perhaps someone could take on the responsibility for BSG promotions. For instance ads in magazines, papers or "any" kind of free or very inexpensive publicity. Forget it, it’s not going to happen. No one appears to be interested and our options are very limited. And besides free is a word that is about to be redefined in Webster’s as a non-existent entity.

Art Doty gave a brief report on the progress of the upcoming CASG 2006 FSF pre-registrations were going very well and they were anticipating a very successful meet.

Don Goeke brought along some items for show and tell. One of them was the new Lionel Union Pacific Northern. (See New Product Report)

Ron Schlicht gave a brief report on the preparations being made for the upcoming 35th anniversary Trainfest. There was also a brief discussion on the fact that the I.R.S. will be checking up on all of the local swap meets. Ron will be following up on this topic with the Wisconsin Department of Revenue. I will give a report on this subject in the next newsletter.

Chic Hartert is beginning to setup plans for the Titletown Train Show, which will be held in Green Bay WI April 28th & 29th. This is just another show that we will have to prepare for and would like club member participation.

Editors note: I know what you are thinking. What??? We are going to another show? I get newsletter from all over the country from various S gauge clubs. Many of them go to a lot more events than we attend, so don’t complain.

Officer Election Nominees

The following are the nominees for the Badgerland S Gaugers Officers. This year we actually had people willing to run for office. We have had too many years when there was one name on the ballot for each office followed by Unopposed and Write-In.

Just in case you don’t know this, Unopposed has been running year, after year, after year, and hasn’t won yet. He, she or it is always listed just in front of Write-In. If you write in a person’s name please check if that person really wants to run for office. We have never had a write in win either.

There will be ballots handed out at the December meeting and the vote will take place on that date. Vote for only one person per office. I know that this sounds like a silly thing to ask, but year after year we have had to throw out ballots on which members voted for two people for the same office.

In the past I have sent out mail in ballots. The most that I ever received back were two. Now I know that two ballots, both here and in Florida, could make a difference. However the cost of another printed sheet has not made the difference in any of the elections so far, although one was of them very close.

If you do wish to vote and cannot attend the meeting, run a copy of the page of the newsletter that the nominees appears on, circle your choice and send it to me. If you don’t save the newsletters anyway, (in years past my newsletters would have ended up in an outhouse for sanitary purposes) you can a send the page back with the nominee listing on it. Don’t forget to circle the name. (You might be surprised if you knew how many members have a copy of every newsletter ever published. I would also bet that the majority of those are individuals that signed the original charter thirty-two years ago.) I was thinking of scanning all of the newsletters and putting them on a disc. Would anyone be interested in this idea? Do you think that they would sell as well as the Seinfeld series episodes?

Your return address will be required on the envelope and make sure that you mail them so that I receive them by December 2nd. One ballot per mailing please, you can be assured that I will not change your vote or even look at your ballot. The law firm of Dewey, Cheetum & Howe will verify my credentials and all of the vote tabulations.

We took some nominations at the September meeting and opened up for additional candidates at the October meeting. With the exception of Ray Puls, there were no new entries onto the ballot. When the question is asked regarding individuals interested in running for office (volunteers), a pin dropping could be compared to a banging gong. There are many instances, on many issues, that when brought up at our meetings, you can hear a feather drop. By the way does anyone know, what is so interesting on the floor that people are always looking at when we ask for volunteers? I must admit, to this date, no one has resorted to hiding under the tables…….yet.

Fall S Fest 2008

A group of members and officers that form part of the Fall S Fest committee met Thursday October 26th in order to start the planning for Fall S Fest 2008. The FSF meeting just happened to coincide with the birthday of the secretary/newsletter editor for the Badgerland S Gaugers. No gifts, brass band or accolades were extended to the now Medicare eligible, slightly senile, individual. I won’t mention his name.

We are looking for a theme for this event. The 33rd Fall S Fest is just not enough. We will be formulating committees and prepare a list of required activities. Feel free to make suggestions, recommendations or even more remarkable, perhaps volunteer for something to do. Lists will be coming out in the near future. It has official we are started. The event will take place November 14th, 15th and 16th and be held at the Four Points Sheraton right across the street from the General Mitchell Airport.

Doug Stoll gave a brief report on the new BSG website. He has completed the updates to the Badgerland S Gaugers web page. Rick Wade and Doug have been coordinating this effort for some time. It is up and running. If you have not seen it yet, be sure to check it out. We have a lot more information on it and plenty of updates. It is also a bit more user friendly and more colorful than in the past. This means that even an idiot like your editor can breeze through it.

If you have a good digital camera, and have some good shots of your layout, send them to Doug. If there are any items that you feel should be on the site, feel free to be a contributor. This should be a great vehicle for our club to spread the word on S gauge. And promote the greatest hobby in the world.

============================

Editors Comment: There was a lot of work put into updated our site. An out of date site can almost be as bad as no site at all. I hope that everyone appreciates the job that Doug has done. Don’t be afraid to let him know.

In addition, technology has changed a lot since Steve Jones originally made the site for us. Creating the original site was also a huge job. We were fortunate to have an individual in our club who had the ambition and ability to create the BSG site to begin with, and give us a foundation to build upon. (For those of you who don’t know Steve, he and his family now reside in Ogden Utah. I here it is a very beautiful area of our country, but why would anyone want to leave a tax hell like Wisconsin.)

"Editors Comments"

Well did you pass another Editors test? How many of you thought that they were getting an old newsletter? How many of you noticed that the headline was the same as last month’s newsletter? How many of you think that we don’t need a headline? How many of you think that I actually made a mistake? At the next meeting let’s take a vote on whether or not we should have a headline in the newsletter. We vote on enough other nonsense and this discussion would probably last less than forty-five minutes.

Since I’m on the subject of mistakes, at the September meeting, it was Art Doty’s’ daughter and granddaughter that helped out Trumann’s wife. In addition, our guest, Robert Boehm, has a "2-foot" electric railroad that runs on 220 volt AC. Thank God I didn’t get next to anything carrying current. That would have resulted in another mistake by your newsletter editor. The good news is that after nearly 23 years, you would finally get a new editor. The bad news is that some poor schmuck would probably be stuck "until death did him part" with the job.

For those of you with spell checker software on your computers, I want you to know that every once and a while I make up words that are not in the English dictionary. I refer to them as the "Ronese", which is a dialect all of my own making. This also adds a puzzle or test for any literary geniuses that read these newsletters. My wife speaks "Sharonese", which is something that I have become accustomed to. This could be the genesis of my bad habit. Some of your spouses may also have this "gift". Now you all know what I mean. You know what your spouse meant, even though anyone else would say……… "What"?

The October meeting of the 2006/2007 Badgerland S Gaugers was hosted by Ron Schlicht and held at Greenfield News and Hobby. It’s easy to spend both time and money at this store because there is so much to see. One of their specialties is radio-controlled equipment, but between model cars, trains, games, planes, art supplies and every magazine under the sun (except really "bad" ones) you have a huge selection of items to peruse through. This store also has two of the most friendly and helpful owners that you will ever meet. Unfortunately S gauge is not on their list of priorities, but then again what retail stores really have S in stock, and on their shelves.

Many of the local shoppers seemed intrigued by the sight of so many people with the same colored shirts and matching caps with the cute little rodent on them. A Badgerland S Gaugers invasion of the store took place. There are two back rooms, that are actually classrooms, which the hobby shop uses for art courses, model building clinics, scenery clinics and all sorts of hobby related workshops. These rooms also act as a great place to hold a meeting.

The turnout for the meeting was pretty good, 26 total. This could be because the Packers aren’t that good this year or the return to Greenfield News & Hobby was a desirable location. This may end up being a location for some future meetings, since hosts are getting harder to find, (outside of the usual suspects).

Giving Thanks

I have mentioned the door prizes already and Gary Children’s other contributions. I must also mention that Harold Immekus made a generous offer to the Badgerland S Gaugers. He sold us a set of the first 15 years of S Fest cars at a very reasonable price. Unfortunately there was no real interest at this year’s Fall S Fest. I am breaking up the set and selling cars individually. We might also keep some for door prizes or promotions. In the past, Harold has made other contributions to our club.

At our October Swap meet an individual walked in (a complete stranger) and said that he had some train stuff that he would like to donate. (A neighbor had passed away and this stuff was left in his garage.). There were boxes of stuff, Marx, American Flyer, some HO (not Gilbert) Plasticville, hand made junk, magazines, you name it, and all in absolutely filthy condition. If my wife saw the boxes, I would not even have been allowed to even bring it into the garage. After 50 hours or so (I’m still not done), avoiding "flesh eating" disease, tetanus, spiders and I hope no future unknown ailment, I got most of it ready for sale. Many of the items were, " do not pass go, do not collect $200.00", go directly to the trash. However the result of this donation, after sales to club members at the October meeting, and Fall S Fest sales resulted in $545.00 going into the club treasury. Thanks to whoever it was. In addition $319.00 worth of BSG items were sold at Fall S Fest. This included some of the Blue Ice reefers. Who do you know wants to buy a car? (inside joke)

The answer is No! I received "no" cut from this donation, outside of those on my hands and some unsellable broken Plasticville that might be able to be used to a kit-bash building or two. Every item has been inventoried and documented on a spreadsheet. This includes the 50 Lire, Allied Military Currency, which was used as a bookmark in one of the magazines. This was really interesting. It is all in English, indicates that it was Issued In Italy and is Series 1943. Unfortunately it is in really poor condition. The back is hardly readable, I had to use an Optivisor and found that on the back of the bill it read: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Freedom From Want and Freedom From Fear. Interesting and is something that should be remembered. Along with a chocolate bar and a pair of nylons, this could probably buy you a lot better time in 1943 than an American Flyer Train. What the heck do you think that this bill is actually worth? I looked on the Internet. People actually are selling stuff like this. At one of our next meetings we can determine what to do with this piece of history. We should be able to kill an hour on that subject.

If you have any items like old issues of Classic Toy magazines, S Gaugians or other model train related items that you no longer have need for, you might think about donating them to our club. (No Model Railroader magazines.)

Unfortunately you will not be eligible for an I.R.S. deduction.) The condition is not critical, however but it must have some potential for being able to be sold (without my spending the rest of my natural life fixing it). I do not want to become the Greenfield recycling center or model train junkyard of Wisconsin. (My wife already thinks that is what the house is.) Some time ago, Don Westby gave me a stack of back issues of CTT. I’ve sold them for $1.00 each and some $1.50 a piece. I have sold them out. Various BSG sales items have resulted in hundreds of dollars going into our treasury.

Fall S Fest Report

The Fall S Fest-2006 hosted by the CASG club in the South-Chicago suburb of Tinley Park, Illinois. Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy. I don’t care what meet, convention or get together that people go to, there will always be some people that find something to complain about. Here is what I think just plain stunk. I did not win a door prize AGAIN. Outside of that, let’s just commend CASG on a job well done. Having worked on S Fest committees I know what it takes.

The facility that the CASG Fall S Fest is held in is first class. The trading pit room is huge, well lit and really nice. The swap meet hall is the largest hall in S Fest history. There is no problem with gridlock, the isles were wide and the vendors had plenty of room between adjoining tables. (In the past, I’ve never found those personal, accidental, intimate, and bump into encounters with the guys behind me, particularly enjoyable). So the CASG facility definitely gets the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.

There were around eight different styles of layouts on display. From Art Doty’s All-Aboard panels to the fine scale modules. There was plenty to enjoy and a real treat for the public.

The food at the banquet was excellent. The very entertaining speaker was one of the original child actors in the A.C. Gilbert Boys Club television shows. He treated us to many interesting stories regarding the show, and other fascinating anecdotes regarding his personal life.

Everyone has talked about the genius of A.C. Gilbert. Just think back to the old days of TV and think about television today. Did A.C. actually produce, or even possible invent, the very "first" infomercial in the history of television with the Boys club shows?

Due to the late night ride home, I was only able to stay for just the beginning of the "really spirited" auction, but it started out with a bang and I’m sure that the rest of it was a huge success.

Thank you CASG for giving us S Gaugers a very enjoyable weekend.

Footnote: Does the S in S gaugers stand for Seniors?

The Badgerland S Gaugers volunteered to bring some modules to the CASG Fall S Fest in order to create a huge modular layout display. The bad news is that BSG ended up running the show. Dick Kloes, Dave Smukowski and Don Goeke ended up being in charge of the layout and spent the majority of their time a FSF 2006 at the layout. This is not what we bargained for. BSG should have been a contributor, not the coordinators and main workers.

Does this mean the S Fest report complete of course not?

Reunite with your S gauge friends in St. Louis MO, November 2 thru 7,2007 for the 32nd Annual Fall S Fest.

Mark those dates on your calendar.

BSG Tips Column

If you don’t want to shorten your life span, don’t work four days at Trainfest. Please somebody send in a dam tip for this column. Make it "BSG" tips, not "RGS" tips. (Those are my initials.)

If any of you have any tips like the ones above send them to the BSG Idiot Newsletter Editor.

============================

Trainfest Report

The last report was the pre-admission report for Trainfest and now on to the post-mortem. This sounds like bad news but my personal autopsy reveals that after the passing of another weekend in West Allis, we left the show looking relatively well.

The WISE Division, as always, put on a great show. Great Show is an understatement. This year broke past year’s records. On Saturday alone, the attendance topped the 13,000 mark. That amount for one day total was remarkable. The two-day event drew almost 21,000. Along with nearly 1900 volunteers, this amounted to a lot of model railroad enthusiasts. These numbers are a result of the tremendous effort put forth by the WISE Division.

On Friday afternoon, all of the volunteers were provided hors d'oeuvre plus a really super diner. The food was terrific. If anyone complained about the meal, I would really like to go to his or her home to eat. They must eat like kings and queens every day. I only hope that everyone fully appreciates a job that was very well done.

"Once again", BSG was treated very favorably by the WISE Div. Not only did we have a very good location for the MIRA manufacturers show, but got a great plug when our club’s name was mentioned on the Channel 12 television newscasts multiple times over the weekend. I must continue to mention this time and time again. "It is a privilege to be invited to this event". We must never abuse or run the risk of losing that privilege.

There appeared to be a lot of activity at the BSG information booth. I would not be surprised if we end up with some new members. We handed out a lot of S gauge literature and a few asked for application blanks.

It’s too bad that there are no real S gauge manufacturers present at this event. Don Heimburger is always there, but he is a publisher and more of a vendor.

Ron Schlicht will continue getting the Trainfest show forms filled out and take care of any additional and necessary correspondence. I will assume full responsibility for the youth layout. I will no longer be the coordinator for the modular layout. Dick Kloes will handle this task. However I will have to know the details of the modular layout size and the members participating prior to the last week of May, in order to get the application in on time. I will be not be handling any of the modular layout details or be responsible for any of the necessary equipment being there.

Due to all of the material covered in this particular newsletter I will save my report (or rants) on "our" participation in the 35th anniversary of Trainfest. I will provide a report on the AF youth layout and would appreciate someone doing a report on the modular layout "progress".

Once again "many", "many" thanks to all of you who helped out at this years Trainfest. A number of our club members were there for more than a day and some were there all four days. As we all get a little long in tooth, it gets a little tougher every year, so your efforts are really appreciated. Unfortunately this paragraph will be your only form of compensation.

Mad-City News

As usual our club will be attending the Mad-City show February 17th & 18th being held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison ,WI. Yeah, yeah, I know you think that it is way too early to talk about. However the application and floor plan had to be sent in October 30th. This meant that I had to get the ball rolling. I have to know who will be bringing modules (I took a shot in the dark on the floor plan) and who will be volunteering to help out over the span of the show. What day or days will you be there? As at Trainfest there will be a limited amount of "free" passes available. Again if you are connected with any other organizations and are able to receive a pass from them, please pursue that option.

At this point in time, I already am at 19 names on the list. At the last meeting I asked if the club wanted to pay for additional passes if we go over the 20 free passes. No motion was made. The statement either fell on deaf ears which means many will have to pay for their own admission. If any members feelings are hurt over who gets the passes, this is the criterion for handing them out. Those who bring modules are number 1, those who will be working there more than one day are number 2, those who will be manning the layouts or the BSG booth for "over" 4 hours is number 3. I have been handling the various show arrangements for the last few years. This includes sending in the application, doing the floor plan, putting the lists together and contacting all of those involved to make sure that all of the equipment, literature and peripherals are in place. I am also in contact with the show directors when any issues arise. I will be more than happy to pass on this task to anyone who is unhappy with the current performance level.

The parking will cost you "again" that is of course, unless you get there before the guard gets there, which is around 7:00am. Due to rising costs there will "not" be a reduced price, two-day parking pass made available. The good news is that there is no parking charge for the Friday setup. (At Trainfest due to my early arrival time Saturday and Sunday, I beat the attendants there and paid no parking fees.) I know what you are thinking, that cheap guy will do anything to guy out of paying. Then again if you want to get up early and get everything done that I did before the shows, I always appreciate the help. By the way if anyone wants to share his or her thoughts, reflections or opinions on this years Trainfest, please send me a report since I was too busy to see the show myself.

I have nothing to do regarding the hotel arrangements for Mad-City, Dave Smukowski takes care of that. Dave reserved a block of 10 rooms at the AmericInn. Three have been set aside so far. Any other members that want a room for that show should call the AmericInn 101 W Broadway Monona, WI (608) 222-8601 and reserve a room. Indicate that you are part of the Badgerland S Gaugers group. Since BSG is a state registered non-profit group, you will not have to pay the various room taxes. Thank Dave Smukowski for setting this up. It amounts a significant monetary savings, particularly in our tax happy state.

Get your reservations in early. That particular week is a busy one in Madison with a lot of activities going on at the same time. Of course you can always try the Bates Motel that Jim Starosta and I stayed at one year. Actually there are two qualifiers for that award. The one that informed us that they were shut down due to "bad water" or the one with nicotine stains on every surface in the room, outside the room and on their parking lot. Their sign even looked brownish. The names of these facilities has been stuck from my memory banks forever. But I can never forget exactly were where they are.

Along with Trainfest, the Mad-City show affords us the most exposure that our club gets every year. When it comes to exposure we don’t want to get caught with our pants down. In nearly all cases that would not be a pretty sight. Remember, Look sharp, feel sharp and be sharp. Most people don’t even know whose motto that was or know what a blue blade was. How many of you can sing the song, I can. Now for a stroll down memory lane.

"How are you fixed for blades? How are you fixed for blades. You better check. Please make sure you have enough, for a worn out blade makes shaving mighty tough. How are you fixed for blades, do you have plenty? Gillette Blue blades we mean." Ba-dump-bump. The Saturday night fights are gone too. Now let’s all sing the Howdy Doody song. "It’s Howdy Doody time. "It’s Howdy Doody time. Oh forget it. Remember your first introduction to classical music with the William Tell Overture that told you that the Lone Ranger was on. Enough is enough before you know it I will be going into all of my pre-puberty activities. However maybe our newsletter could have a column called "Blast from the Past", Oldies but Goodies", "The Good Old Days" or "I Remember When". We certainly have enough "old" members that could contribute interesting articles about those days of yesteryear. (Oh I feel the Lone Ranger theme creeping in again.)

New Product Review

I received my new Lionel American Flyer Union Pacific Northern. What a beautiful engine. I love the paint scheme. The UP on the tender could have been a bit higher, but then again I don’t know what the real ones looked like. So no white wall tires, real engines didn’t really have them anyway. When they did have them, it might have only been on the side of the engine that they used for the promotional pictures. I do not have command control. This is probably a minus for me. The sound is outstanding as far as the volume goes. However what is the chirping bird or chipmunk sound emanating from the engine? Smoke? What smoke? The pulling capabilities of this engine are somewhat suspect. This engine will not run ram speed, if that is what you like. Compared to some of my original AF engines it takes a lot more power to run. I was so disappointed originally that I took it to Steve Lunde’s home to see how it ran on his layout. It ran pretty well there. We did not have the time to attach cars. If there is any voltage drop on your layout this engine will find it. Unfortunately I have "all" original AF track, which is probably a minus. I will be rewiring my layout to provide more connections and improve all operations. Hopefully this will result in the UP running at an "acceptable" level. But the chirping, what’s with that? Will this engine ever pull my full set of American Flyer, UP passenger cars: combination, diner, two coaches, two vista-domes and an observation car? God I hope so, I don’t need another shelf piece. But otherwise it’s a really, really nice engine.

Ok here comes another non-scale product report. I recently purchased a Lionel 6-14229 Crossing Shanty. It features a lighted interior and movable hinged shutters on the two side windows. The paint scheme and trim is really nice and well done. It is an attractive addition to my layout. Curses, another eight foot high doorway on my 3/16" layout.

If you don’t want to read about this Lionel crap anymore, please pay attention to the next paragraph.

If you purchase any new items currently on the market, please notify your editor as to how you feel about the products quality, appeal and performance. If possible, please include a Word document that I can paste into the newsletter.

Holiday Train

Each year, thousands of people gather along CPR's route to enjoy the arrival of the brightly decorated trains and watch entertainers perform a live holiday concert.
This years' entertainers on the U.S. Holiday Train include Milwaukee folk-rocker Willy Porter, Nashville bluegrass/country singer-songwriter and former New Grass Revival guitarist Pat Flynn and Canadian Country Music Association Hall of Famer Tracey Brown. Entertainers on the Canadian Holiday Train include Canadian Blues rockers Wide Mouth Mason and Lisa Brokop, one of Canada's finest vocalists.

At each stop, people donate money and nonperishable food and Canadian Pacific Railway presents a check for the local food bank -- cash donations are especially appreciated because every dollar collected can distribute $9 worth of food.

Since the Holiday Train program began in 1999, more than $2.4 million and 1.2 million pounds of food have been collected.
