"Editors Comments"
Did I mention rain in the last newsletter? Be careful what you ask for. After the newsletter was completed, I nearly drowned on the way to the printer. It rained so hard the windshield wipers couldn’t keep up with it
The 2006 Badgerland S Gaugers picnic was held at Jim Starosta’s home. It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood; Ray Puls arrived early in the morning to start up the chicken roast. (That isn’t a reference to some of our club members.) The weather turned out to be just about perfect, warm, and sunny with just a hint of thin clouds to make everything very pleasant. We had a very good turnout, 28 attendees total. 29 if you count Gary Children who was already committed to working at the East Troy Trolley Museum, but made a brief appearance at the picnic.
The food and beverages were excellent. As a matter of fact everything was so good that I had to make an emergency run to Jewel Foods for more supplies. Jim kept the coolers well packed and the food in the kitchen was kept warm in Nesco's. Jim’s basement was open to those who wished to see his layout and railroad memorabilia. If you are one of those who loved The Milwaukee Road, you more than likely thoroughly enjoyed the trip to the basement. (Jim has also volunteered to host this year’s Christmas party.)
This was a good time to talk about the summer, trains and general items of interest without having one of those "beat a dead horse" discussions relating to club activities. There are some really neat items coming out in S gauge this fall. Some of our members shared their knowledge regarding the new products and we got a preview of some of them.
Many thanks go out to all of those who brought some food and beverages along to fill our stomachs, many of which did not need more filling. A special thanks to Jim Starosta for hosting this event and Ray and June Puls who worked hard preparing the chicken.
The only bad news was that the picnic conflicted with the NASG convention. I have never attended one of these conventions and was unaware of the date. If we would have been a bit more informed we might have shifted the date for the picnic. Well maybe next year there won’t be any conflict of dates. Perhaps I will get a report from someone on the NASG convention to put in the newsletter, but I doubt it.
The new season will be starting up soon. With the summer being a bit on the hot side, the basement was a great place to be, for me that meant trains. For most of you summer is a break from trains, but then again I’m just a bit crazy. The youth layout has received a "major, major" facelift. I am about as excited as I have ever been, regarding the layout and I’m really looking forward to Trainfest and all of the places that the layout will be on display. Don’t forget to let me know early, just which shows that you will be attending. I always get asked when the shows are. It is usually in our newsletters under the BSG Calendar Of Events. (The events’ listing appears to be just another useless piece of information.)
Being retired I have a lot of time to spend on trains and just about whatever I care to. I also watch, maybe a bit too much, TV. You also get to see an awful lot of commercials. It is amazing just how many things are constantly being pushed on us these days. If I ever hear the following line in a commercial, I’ll know my life is over, as I know it.
"I knew enjoying model railroading was one of the best things in the world, but I didn’t know that it could lead to E.D."
(You have to watch a lot of TV to understand the above statement.)
Start thinking about the nominations for officers this year. We will need a new president, a BSG president, in addition to whatever clown, clowness (female-no gender bias) or clownist (clownist being and independent) replaces the one in Washington D.C. Don’t look for the above terms in Webster’s, I use a liberal literary license even though I am a conservative at heart.
This year will signal the official hard driving talk on Fall S Fest 2008. Most items will be resolved at S Fest committee meetings rather than having to weed through hundreds of inane suggestions at meeting and beating them to death for hours. If there are some ideas that you have contact Steve Lunde, he is the S Fest Chairman. There will be a listing of the other S Fest committee "persons" to whom you can request additional information in future newsletters.
I have volunteered to put together information on past Fall S Fests but as of now have not received any responses to my requests from any of the participating clubs.
The 2005-2006 financial reports should be available at the October BSG general meeting. It will cover the timeframe from September 1st, 2005 to August 31st 2006.
Fall S Fest Reminder
The Fall S Fest-2006 is scheduled from November 2nd (Thursday) thru November 5th (Sunday), and will be hosted by the CASG club in the South-Chicago suburb of Tinley Park, Illinois.
If you have not registered or received any information on this years Fall S Fest contact:
Joel Lebovitz –
CASG Fall S Fest Registrar
159 Shadowbend Drive
Wheeling, Illinois 60090-3151
Phone: 847/ 541-3945
The Badgerland S Gaugers will be participating in the large modular layout that will be setup at this year’s Fall S Fest. We would appreciate it if all of BSG members attending the S Fest would spend a little time (an hour or so) helping out and manning the layout.

BSG Tips Column.
With the temperatures reaching record highs in our area and throughout the country, here is my BSG tip. Run through your lawn sprinkler, it will make you feel like a kid again. Who cares if your neighbors think senility has kicked in. As a matter of fact, ask them to join you, then sit down with refreshment and talk about the things that you did as a child. You’ll both feel younger after the experience. Now if you sit down on the living room floor and push your trains around making choo-choo sounds, consult your physician. This also probably means you are suffering from E.D.

New Product Review
I have nothing to report at this time. It’s summertime. Almost everything that I buy is used and most of the new stuff that I purchase is the wrong scale. It’s the dreaded Hi-Railer disease N.S. (Non-Scaleitis).
If you purchase any new items currently on the market, please notify your editor as to how you feel about the products quality, appeal and performance.
New Products From Lionel
1. American Flyer Tie Ejector Car,
2. Animated Track Gang
First introduced in S gauge in 1946, the popular #594 Animated Track Gang Set is available once again, 60 years later. This classic accessory features three animated figures. When a train passes by, the foreman moves forward, halting the two figures working with jackhammers
3. The 0-6-0 Dockside Switcher rejoins the American Flyer roster with two new road names. Bethlehem Steel and New York Central
4. Featuring die-cast metal trucks and directional lighting, the Baldwin switcher appears in the Western Maryland livery.
5. The American Flyer Northern returns as #809 in the striking Union Pacific greyhound livery. Complete with smoke lifters, or "elephant ears," this massive locomotive features the conventional RailSounds sound system and conventional transformer operation.
6. American Flyer Holiday Box Car.
7. American Flyer Christmas Caboose
8. The North Pole Central yard bustles with activity during the holidays. This classic 0-6-0 Christmas Dockside Switcher, colorfully decorated for Christmas, joins the American Flyer roster and adds motive power at a great value.
9. The Candy Cane Dump Cars drop off Santa’s favorite treat.
Editor’s Opinion:
Boy, Oh Boy, Oh @#$%^&*.
There are ten items if you want to count the two road names on the Docksiders. Well I bought the Docksiders last year and have no use for additional ones that look nearly the same as last years. In addition, their performance evaluation reads: Did not meet expectations.
The tie ejector car is not exactly a real winner, but better than some of their other offerings.
The animated track gang I can’t believe that a huge amount where originally sold. It is very toy looking and does not come close to any of the Lionel animated accessories. Why would I want one? I don’t.
The Baldwin switcher is another in a line of unattractive paint schemes that Lionel has produced. Did every railroad have ugly paint schemes or does Lionel just have a lousy marketing department?
Christmas cars, Christmas cars, Christmas cars, I don’t own one and never will. I suppose that a dump car, dumping candy canes is novel. The North Pole Docksider paint scheme actually has more effort than put into it than the current Docksider renderings. Dump cars are a great idea since I always seem to see people dumping Christmas cars at swap meets.
Finally, thank God, the Northern 4-8-4, and done in an absolutely beautiful U.P. paint scheme. Batting a hundred will not get you into the major leagues, but the U.P. is like a grand slam home run for Lionel American Flyer. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once and a while. This is the only item really worth talking about. I definitely have to see one of these engines. Coming up with the financing is another question.
As always read the disclaimer at the end of our newsletters. Dissenting opinions are welcome. For that matter any outside input into this publication is welcome.
