Meeting Reports
Steve Lunde opened the April general meeting of BSG. This was the last general meeting of the season.
Dick Kloes gave a brief report on this past year swap meets. The revenue was down from the previous year. A contributing factor was that we had a cancellation due to bad weather.
A short discussion followed on the swap meets.
Ron Schlicht suggested that we follow the lead taken by the St. Louis club and prepare a promotional 2008 Fall S Fest flyer that could be passed out this year in St. Louis. We might also follow-up with this at the Spring S Spree.
We were supposed to have the Fall S Fest patch design project resolved. Only one person entered. We are extending the contest duration period. If your designs are not completed and submitted to Ron Schlicht prior to the first meeting of the year, "no exceptions", I win "AGAIN". In case you are unaware of this, the winner of the patch "contest" gets nothing, no prize, no trophy, no blue ribbon, no frequent flyer miles, not even a free patch.
The 2008 Fall S-Fest car design is in the works but all of the details were not worked out at the meeting. Once again we will offer a reduced rate to BSG members only on a prepay basis, in order that we can get seed money for the down payment on the car order. We took an unofficial count at the meeting to get an idea of how many present would be ordering the car. The amount of cars that we will be ordering was not made at this time.
(At the writing of this newsletter, the design has been finalized with Don Thompson. An order for a sample has been made and it is our hope that we have a sample of the car in St. Louis. We are planning to offer three car numbers #2008, #3301 and #3302.)
Ron Schlicht came up with a design for a BSG club business card. Doug Stoll had made the suggestion some time ago. The card design is relatively generic containing the badger logo, club name, year established, scale, letterhead motto and website. There is no other contact information. This avoids having to revise the card at any point in time. Any member can furnish a name and contact number on the back of the card if they wish to do so. When we get the cards made I will be putting my name and phone number on the cards that I carry with me to shows.
Doug Stoll gave a report on the progress being made on our website. There is a "members only" area that requires a password to gain access. Doug has also offered to photograph your layout if you are interested. Your layout can be added to our website and thereby give you an opportunity to share it with other S gaugers.
(If you have not visited the site recently, check it out.)
Chuck Porter passed out some free calendars and brought along a sample of an S-Helper, Minneapolis, Northfield & Southern boxcar. The car is being used as a fundraiser. Some members ordered one of the cars.

This is your official notice for the BSG September meeting. This means that you "will not" be receiving another newsletter prior to the next meeting. I am saving on postage for the club and sending the newsletter with the picnic notice. I know that some of you will forget the meeting by then. It happened the last time that I actually gave a few weeks notice. Mark your calendars, place this newsletter on your refrigerator, put it under your pillow. Better yet, tell your wife to remind you. For you single people, I’m sorry, you just don’t have someone to remind you of something over and over and over again. Remember, I’m not like the Beatles and don’t "want to hold your hand". September 8th.

"Editors Comments"
Dick Kloes hosted the April general meeting of the Badgerland S Gaugers. As usual we all had a good time at Dicks. His layout is really something special.
Yet another honor was bestowed on a Badgerland S Gauger. The Root River & Southern Railroad, which is Dick Kloes’s layout was featured in the July 2007 issue of Classic Toy Trains magazine. For those of you who have been unable to make it to one of those meetings that were held at Dick’s house, now have a chance to at least see some of the layout. If you have a computer you can go to our website and click on S Scale layouts and you will see even more of his layout. If you have not been to a meeting at Dick’s home, don’t have a computer with Internet access and visited our site, not visited Dick on your own or are too cheap to buy the magazine, what are you doing in a model railroad club anyway?
Fall S Fest 2008 Report
The BSG Fall S Fest committee has been meeting on a regular basis. We hope to have the sample of the 33rd Fall S Fest car ready for this years Fall S Fest in St. Louis. Everyone will have a different opinion on this car. Some will like it and others might not.
The theme for our Fall S Fest will be "Make Fall S-Fest Great In 2008". The idea is that everyone attending, the registrants, dealers, manufacturers, model contest entrants, clinic presenters and basically all of those that participate in this annual event, are what make Fall S-Fest great. The Badgerland S Gaugers are just the facilitators. Our job is to insure that all have a pleasant and memorable stay in our city.
Plan Ahead
This year we will need even more help at Trainfest and Mad-City than in the past. The club is not getting any younger. Please let me know what shows that you will be able to help out at. If we do not get enough help, we may have to start cutting back on some of our activities and that would be a shame. BSG is the major promoter of S gauge in the state of Wisconsin. Our club has been the most proactive of the various groups in this state. Contact Ron Schlicht for more information.
The World Greatest Hobby
The following is an email that I received from Wil Holt. Give me your opinions on this event. We have to respond pretty soon. This is not a BSG executive decision, it is a BSG membership participation decision. Which layout might be taken is up in the air.
-----------------------------------------------
I am sure you are familiar with the World's Greatest Hobby promotional effort, but may not be as up-to-date on the WGH On Tour shows. These started in January 2005 as four shows rotating around each region of the U. S. with a special emphasis on bringing in families interested in getting started in model railroading and never having been to a train show before.
These shows have now expanded to 6 sites each year, with the plan be in each market area once every 7 years or so.
The first of the Winter 2008 shows will be held at the Schaumburg Convention Center this Thanksgiving weekend, November 24-25. I would anticipate that the attendance will be more than 30,000 since they have consistently draw attendances in the range of 30,000 or more in markets much smaller than Chicago. There are already plans in place for Chicagoland to have a booth with standard gauge and narrow gauge modular layouts there, along with a co-operative booth in the range of 10-by-30 to 10-by-50 between NASG, CASG and two or three manufacturers. Hopefully this booth will also be across the aisle from Lionel.
Since they promote this show so heavily (very extensive TV and print advertising) they will draw attendees from southern Wisconsin. BSG should consider signing up to bring down the modular layout, or perhaps your layout (R. Schlicht Hi-Rail). It would be great to have 3-4 operating S gauge layouts in the layout area along with the booth space. S can look very appealing at this show, since major manufacturers and distributors in other scales generally do not do more than an average booth, mostly 10-by10 or 10-by-20.
If you need to know more information, please call me at 630-969-1982 or go to their web site, www.wghshow.com. The forms for signing up are on the web.
Since this is very likely a show that will fill up with layouts early, you all show talk this over very soon.
Kind regards,
Will Holt

Titletown Train Show Report
This was the third year in a row that we attended the train show in Green Bay. The attendance was just under 5,000 for the two-day event. Just like last year, there were a lot of events going on in Green Bay. Right next door in the coliseum was a large dog show. Again there was the National Football League Draft taking place that weekend and I have no clue how many thousand people were at Lambeau Field for that.
Ron Schlicht hauled the small layout to the show along with the AF operating accessories for an 8-foot table extension. The Badgerland S Gaugers "North Division", Chic Hartert, Ron Fadale and company brought their S scale layout to the show and were located in another area of the hall. The layout is still under construction but really looks good at this point in time.
Both layouts received a lot of attention, as did the accessory extension. Once again it was a really nice show and we will continue to setup at future Titletown train shows.
Gary Children and Jeff Young brought the BSG information booth to the show.
Once again I was accompanied by my lovely, high maintenance, casino loving wife. The Oneida gaming casino changes this event from another "dammed" train show to a very expensive trip for "us’.
"Playtime / Traintime"
None scheduled.
New Product Review
Nothing to report at this time. It’s summertime, who in the Heck looks for train stuff in 90-degree weather.
If you purchase any new items currently on the market, please notify your editor as to how you feel about the products quality, appeal and performance. If possible, please include a Word document that I can paste into the newsletter.
