Meeting Reports

Steve Lunde opened the BSG October general meeting wishing everyone a Happy Holidays.

2008 Fall S-Fest Report

Steve received the first sample of the 2008 Fall S Fest car from S-Helper Service. It really looked great. There will be a couple modifications made prior to the full run, which will be made shortly. We are ordering fewer cars than our last two Fall S Fests. So the demand could exceed the cars ordered.

The cars will be manufactured in three car numbers: 2008, 3301 & 3302. The number 2008 is self-explanatory and it will be the 33rd annual Fall S Fest, thus the 01 & 02 cars.

The cars will be sold at a discounted rate to club members at the price of $37.50 per car until March 1st 2008. After that date the cars will be $40.00 to club members.

The Fall S Fest car price has not been establish yet. We will encourage our members to make their purchase early in order to have seed money for the final car requisition.

Make your checks payable to the Badgerland S Gaugers and send it to our Treasurer Jeff Young. Specify the car or car numbers that you want. Note on the check "2008 S Fest Car". Order now at the reduced rate or end up paying the full freight.

Many of the members at the meeting, including yours truly, placed their order and put their money down. The car already has a planned location on my layout. I’ll only need two more local breweries for a six pack train.

Steve also showed a sample of a planned BSG coffee mug. We will investigate interest in this project prior to placing an order. I’d buy one, but then I buy anything with our logo on it.

Chic Hartert has lined up some individuals for S Fest clinics. If any of our members have any suggestions for clinics and have an individual in mind, please contact one of the club officers. We can never have too many clinic presenters.

Jim Starosta has lined up, what will be a very interesting and entertaining speaker for Fall S Fest 2008.

The car, the patch, our speaker and a many other items have been determined and more are in the works. We have a good start on S Fest 2008. We will still require a lot of help from our membership. Look for good ideas for door prizes and check out your sources, we will need a lot of them. We will have a posting of some of the duties that we will need to get assistance with. Get you "S" in gear and VOLUNTEER.

Ron Schlicht gave a brief report on upcoming model railroading shows that our club will be attending in one fashion or another. February is a three straight weekender for me. Check your BSG calendar of events in this newsletter.

Modular Layout Report Steve Lunde has secured a place near Barker Road and I-94 where we would be able to set up the modular layout and work on it. The only cost would be for heat and electricity, which he estimated to be around $30.00 per month. The approximate floor space is 50 feet by 60 feet and will be available after January 1st. This facility would be a relatively centralized location for our membership.

We will be scheduling a board of directors meeting along with a modular committee meeting in the near future. This meeting will be open to all members.

It is imperative that the layout gets a major facelift. It is one of the tools that we use for promoting S gauge. At this time our image needs a bit of improvement. I’m sure that we will get "the usual crew" to make physical enhancements to the layout. What is still one of the key predicaments with our layout is transportation. This means that in most instances we will just need individuals to get the modules to and from the shows. I store, transport, upgrade and maintain "10" four-foot modules for the Hi-rail layout "by myself". If there is not enough interest in the modular layout, perhaps we should forget the modular layout. If that happens and our members show that little interest, perhaps this editor should be looking for another organization to join.

Dick Kloes gave a report on the Winter Jamboree in Waukesha. In conjunction with this event there is a model railroad show that is sponsored and organized by the Waukesha Gandy-Dancers model railroad club. In the past Dave & Sandy Smukowski took the small layout to this event. The event runs from January 18th thru the 20th. The small layout will be setup on Saturday Jan. 19th. The doors will be open to the public from 10:00am to 5:00pm, setup will be around 8:00am. Dick Kloes, Gary Children, Fred Vergenz and Kathy Pilon have volunteered to help out. If you wish to assist them contact Dick.

Speaking of Dick, since he ran unopposed for the office of director, we had one of our usual "railroading" elections, which amounted to all in favor of Dick as our new director say "aye" all opposed? Unanimous again.

Art Doty gave a report on one of the new S Gauge cars that are for sale. He passed around some ordering literature. This marks one of the shortest reports he has ever given.

"Editors Comments"

First of all I hope that you all had a relaxing, healthy and enjoyable Holiday season. I hope that Santa brought you what you wanted. Actually for a model railroader a bag of coal is not a bad thing as long as it is to scale. Let’s hope that 2008 will be great. With our club hosting Fall S Fest in November it will certainly be a busy year for us.

Kim & Jeff Young hosted the BSG December general meeting & Holiday party. There was plenty to eat and drink, the meeting was extremely short and we had a great time.

In keeping with the theme of not offending anyone who doesn’t believe in Santa Claus or the word Christmas, we now have a Holiday party. However Santa did visit us again this year. BSG member, John Nugent, who makes an extraordinary looking Santa, stopped in for a visit. John annually goes to various nursing homes and churches to visit and bring joy to others. Every year he lets his white beard grown a bit longer for the season. We all got our candy canes and were reminded how it is to be a child again.

It was BSG Showtime. Jeff Madden gave an entertaining slide presentation on the past NASG convention held in Baltimore, MD. Not only did we see a lot of great railroad pictures but some really fabulous model railroad layouts. We actually had a double feature at this meeting. Chuck Porter also had a slide show, which highlighted his trip to the Jamaica, the Panama Canal and Costa Rica. We got to see some trains and the beauty of those countries.

All in all these members made this one of our more entertaining meetings. If any of our members wish to make any type of presentations at our meetings feel free to do so. The only criteria are that they are not triple X rated, no matter what Cal Krasonya suggests. This year, even though it will be one of our busiest, has to be more fun than we have had in the past. That’s what the club is supposed to be about.

New Product Review

I don’t remember if anyone has ever submitted anything to this column. This only means that you will have to read some more of my nonsense.

I now have Lionel three-rail track on my layout, ........well kind of. I purchased the Lionel #6-24105 Animated Track Gang and repainted the base and the working figures. I preceded the accessory with a five-inch section of Lionel Fas Track. I removed two rails and added a piece of American Flyer tinplate track lining it up at S gauge spacing. Using a soldering iron to stipple and melt the plastic, makes it look like the rest of the ballast. I filled in the tie gap and repainted the ties. I used squadron putty to fill in and taper each section one to another. It now lines up with the Flyer track on one of my sidings. With an American Flyer Brown hoist raising the unused third rail over to a junk pile, it's entertaining. You might say that it is "getting it right" or just we Flyers boys sticking it to the Lionel guys. The animation is neat and it added eight more people to the layout. The original idea is not mine, but my execution of it is unique. Jim Starosta also made a similar one and displayed it at the November swap meet.

If you purchase any new items currently on the market, please notify your editor as to how you feel about the products quality, appeal and performance. If possible, please include a Word document that I can paste into the newsletter.
