Meeting Reports

Steve Lunde opened the BSG January general meeting and once again brought the sample of the 2008 Fall S Fest car from S-Helper Service to show to the members.

Last year Steve hosted the January meeting and ten of us BSG hardy souls braved a snowstorm. This year the weather was pretty good and we had a pretty good member turnout. Steve passed around the very nice thank you letter that we received from AFSGSLA for our donations to their past 2007 Fall S Fest.

2008 Fall S-Fest Cars

Reminder!!!!

The cars will be sold at a discounted rate to club members at the price of $37.50 per car until March 1st 2008. After that date the cars will be $40.00 each to club members.

Make your checks payable to the Badgerland S Gaugers and send it to our Treasurer Jeff Young. Specify the car or car numbers that you want 2008, 3301 or 3302.

Note on the check "2008 S Fest Car".

-----------------------------------------------

At the December meeting Steve showed a sample of a planned BSG coffee mug. If any of our members have interest in purchasing one of these please let Steve know. As with all projects of this type, the price is determined by the amount that is purchased. The club could use them for door prizes and other purposes. However if there is not enough interest we may not pursue the project.

Art Doty gave a report on a multitude of model railroading activities around the Midwest and the country. He also passed around some flyers on the events. I had mentioned in the last newsletter that Art’s previous report was one of the shortest that he had ever given. He more than made up for that comment.

Ron Schlicht gave a brief report on the upcoming model railroading shows Mad-City, Mitchell Park Domes and MSOE that the club will be attending.

Modular Layout Report

There was a brief discussion on the BSG modular layout. Gary children noted that there have been some comments made regarding the lack of progress on the layout in general. Some of the modules have not been properly maintained and are in need of repair or just upgrades. We need a place to be able to set up the modular layout and work on it. We would like to make this a club project rather than just an individual effort by one of the usual suspects. At Trainfest and other events our layouts represent who we are and what we do. We have to do a bit better in order to enhance our image. The layouts might encourage individuals to want to be part of our club and perhaps increase our membership.

Dick Kloes scheduled a working session at his home to work on one set of ends, which he has already started to modify. The club owns a number of modules that at this point, are not being used because they are not suitable for show.

P.S. A couple of members gathered at Dick’s home after the general meeting. Later in the week a handful of members meet at Dick’s and plans for the modular layout were discussed. The progress made on one set of ends by primarily Dick with the help of Gary Children, Gil Bruck and Ron Schlicht is dramatic. The club plans on fixing up 16 feet of modules that were donated to the club by Gary Children and the late Ray Gwitt. As soon as we get all of the various club modules to a central location, we would like to get as many members involved in the process of reviving the modular layout. If only to observe, learn, ask questions or actually help out, we want to have this be a club "fun type" activity other than the business meetings. When we have finalized the arrangements for the facility we will set up a regular operations night schedule open to all members. Information will be in the newsletter.

DCC for the modular layout was brought up. From what this editor has witnessed and other members have noticed is that this may not be one of our bigger problems. Joel Lebovitz and Wil Holt have brought modules with a DCC system and they worked fine. One of the problems that occurred was that we did not have enough members paying attention to the running trains. When a coupler came apart and cars were stranded on the track it took a screaming public to point it out. By the time the message got to the individual at the controller, bang we had a crash. What we really need at the layout are individuals participating. DCC does not solve that shortage problem. I’m not saying that DCC isn’t a good idea, but at present we have many more issues with the layout than DCC.

At one time we had one of the largest layouts at Trainfest. We proved that bigger was not better. We have to improve what we have and think "smaller". There are "VERY" few S gauge layouts in the area and from what I have seen none of them are very spectacular.

Editor’s Vent ?%#@*&^/

If I have to write many, or perhaps any, more articles on the state of the modular layout not being up to par, my head is going to explode. The next reports will either mention the strides made on improving the layout, or you will never hear about the layout again from this editor. Every time I hear about the modular layout, it’s that we don’t have enough help; we have no place to store it or no way to get the modules back and forth. Hauling around ten of my own modules and a bunch of boxes by myself makes me tired of listening to the talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk, talk and more talk about the modular fiasco.

Dick Kloes also gave a report on the upcoming Waukesha Winter Jamboree.

P.S. Dick, Gary Children, Ray Puls, Fred Vergenz and Kathy Pilon set up and ran the small layout at the jamboree on Saturday, January 19th. The layout was in the building with the permanent Gandy-Dancers HO layout, along with a small Lionel layout and an N scale layout. The layout and equipment ran fine. There was a smaller public turnout this year, but that may have been due to the very frigid weather.

Roman Berdes is a member of BSG and current member and past president of the Lionel club. He provided us with some information on the level of Lionel club member participation in their swap meet. The new location and the facility has been a plus for their meet. Their members do a lot to promote the meet. They have definitely outworked us; admittedly they have a larger member pool to draw from. We have to have our members taking flyers to their local banks, credit unions, grocery stores, gas stations, hardware store or any business with a public bulletin board. Roman also told us about the progress being made at their clubhouse. He also pointed out that the problem of not having enough help is not universal to BSG. However none of us realize the amount of work that goes into financing, running and maintaining a private clubhouse, it reaches far beyond many of our problems. We don’t have to deal with tax accountants, community government officials, condominium committees or fire marshals.

Roman did point out one of the advantages to the clubhouse is that individuals can bring their engines to the clubhouse and run them. This may be a contributing factor in people joining their club.

If we just have the modular layout set up in an area, we could encourage swap meet attendees and the general public to test their S gauge equipment on the layout. We might even set up the small swap meet layout at the same place for the same purpose. We could also maintain the BSG stock and have the layout as a test track. For the first time since I have belonged to the club we could have all of our equipment in a central location, even if it is a temporary location.

P.S. I attended Lionel’s last swap and met with a few of our BSG members. I also was given the opportunity to tour the Lionel Club facility after the meet. It is really impressive and improves with every visit. Some day this will be the premier model railroad club in America.

Chic Hartert will be doing a clinic on various methods of making trees at our next meeting. He has also volunteered to make a number of trees for the modular layout. He will be showing off his skills at next years Fall S Fest also by doing a clinic. A discussion followed on different ideas for applying trees to the modular layout. Ron Schlicht has already utilized some of the methods on the Hi-Rail layout.

BSG will have some clinics or activities planned for "all" of our general meetings hopefully it will be entertaining and educational stuff. We have had some interesting slide presentations in the past, even though Brad Nelson slept through some of them.

Speaking of Brad Nelson, he will be honored by having his train layout featured in one of the upcoming March issue of Classic Toy Trains. Many years ago Brad Nelson’s scenic s gauge layout adorned the cover of CTT and was the featured layout in the 1990 August issue. If you remember the issue or ever saw the layout in person you would marvel at the amount of courage it took to tear the whole thing down and start from scratch again. Well the forthcoming article will feature his new layout and I would be surprised if it didn’t mention the old one. For those who save the back issues like me, I took another peek at the old layout. Wow most model railroaders would kill for a layout like the old one.

Doug Stoll passed around a pile of color pictures that he took at Trainfest of different layouts at the show in order to show various methods of detailing a module. These could be used as a stimulus for the modular layout or your home layouts. (I am definitely using some of them for my layout.)

Doug also suggested that we have a steering committee to gather ideas for bolstering our membership. He also recommended that we develop workshops for members either after meetings, special events, or at new modular location to work on modules.

Workshop Ideas:

AF service including oiling, cleaning,
E-unit service,
tire replacement,
wheel quartering,
wheel replacement for locos and cars,
gauging wheel-sets,
gauging track,
Restoring original equipment.
Servicing accessories and adjusting solenoids and vibration amounts for function,

Track wiring. Understanding wire gauges.
Basics on how to solder track, wiring, IC chips,
AC to DC wiring,
conversions of AF locos to DC using rectifiers, what is required,
Track wiring changes or additions can motor installation,

Conversions to LED lights in cars or locomotives, and how to make them last

Weathering on cars, locos and buildings.
Permanent and temporary
Coupler conversions from AF to Kadee 800 series
Constant lighting techniques for cars
Converting the tracks and cars to scale or semi scale.
Convert from high-rail
Hand laying track with wooden ties, rail and nails
Making scenery.
Trees. Deciduous and coniferous. Small and larger to scale. Good 50’ oak or pine would be about 9" high
Shrubs, bushes, Stumps from logging area, Rocks, Lakes, Ponds with weeds,
Waterfalls, Ripples in water, Backdrops, painting clouds.
Making of scenes look real and creating detail.

"We have members in our club who have all of the above skills."
For those of you who are unable to attend any of our meetings, a lot of the subjects that are listed above are tossed around after the general meetings especially when we have a host with a nice home layout.

Some of our members have materials like rock molds, other tools and items that they could loan out to members. Some of our members are just starting a layout, or like myself are making a major revision to a layout. Some of the above mentioned skill sets are areas that I am lacking in. (Not to mention the shortcomings of the publishing of a newsletter.) There are too many untapped resources in our club.

Doug also mentioned that there are areas of the club by-laws that perhaps require updating.

"Editors Comments"
Ron Schlicht hosted the BSG January general meeting. It was held at the Greenfield News & Hobby store in one of their classrooms. The hobby shop utilizes two rooms for all types of seminars ranging from painting, scenery making, model kit building, pinewood derby cars and a myriad of other topics. This may be one of the only "hobby shops" in town engaging in educational programs for young and old hobbyists. Most stores are just retail facilities. The atmosphere at GN & H is always very friendly, courteous and helpful. This is shown not only by their staff but also from the owners who work the aisles and assist customers. We encourage our members to patronize their store. They offer club discounts to our members.

For a few years now I have been taping the meetings and then painfully listening to them in order to put out the newsletter. The club purchased a small hand held tape recorder two or three years ago. Well prior to the last meeting in my haste to drag all of the stuff that I have to take with me, I dropped the tape recorder. The cover flew in one direction and the recorder in another. I managed to get the cover back on but it is not quite right. Something inside might have broken. It still records, it plays back and the sound levels are more than loud enough. That is the good news. The bad news is that the meetings are not as long as they are in real time. Now you may consider that good news. However there is something wrong with the speed levels. This means that I can’t tell the difference between Steve Lunde, Jeff Young or Dick Kloes, they all sound like Simon, Theodore and ALVIN!!!!! For those of you who are uninformed, those were the Chipmunks. I now have two speeds on the tapes Chipmunks or indiscernible. At least having to listen to the meetings again, makes them somewhat entertaining. The only thing that would have made this even funnier is if I received a HULA HOOP for Christmas. If anyone knows anything about this type of recording device please let me know.

The last meeting was one of our more productive ones. Many issues were raised on how we can improve BSG. For the past year Steve Lunde has been trying to stress the point that BSG has turned into the NFC. No not the National Football Conference, but the No Fun Club. (Boo, Hoo, Hoo, the Packers lost and some of the membership are in need of bereavement counseling.) That is going to change.

Many years back President Kennedy said: "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country".

In our case your editor once mistakenly paraphrased that statement. The real question is in reverse. What can BSG offer the public or fellow S gaugers who are not BSG members? There has to be an incentive. If it is "only" free admission to the swap meets then we gain nothing, and from an S gauge and entertainment standpoint, neither do they.

It has been suggested that I create a form at the bottom of a newsletter with open format or list of items. What do members want or expect from the club? A response can be mailed back with a list of suggestions. Might this work? If some of the responses are like some of the suggestions that I have heard at some of our meetings, there may be the possibility of my head exploding again. It’s either that or spinning like the little girl in "The Exorcist" and the room getting real cold. I already use the foul language

As previously mentioned Chic Hartert will give a clinic on trees at the February meeting. WHO DO YOU KNOW WANTS TO PUT ON A CLINIC?

We will need a presentation for our April, September, Etc., Etc. meetings.
(The March meeting will feature soldering techniques.)

S GAUGE WISCONSIN, INC.: SGW

As of December 1, 2007, S Gauge Wisconsin, Inc. has begun operations as a new S Gauge club in Wisconsin. The new club is headquartered in Madison. It is expected that localized subdivisions will be established to bring S Scale as close to member’s homes as possible.

Some of the purposes of the club are: the "collection, restoration and maintenance of all S gauge model trains including all accessories and attachments thereto with a specific emphasis on developing public presentations and educational programs; ………the creation and operation of S gauge model train layouts, dioramas and demonstrations of historic interest related to actual railroading in the U. S.;………..an emphasis will be placed on portable displays to be taken to public venues."

S Gauge Wisconsin, above all, will be an active club encouraging all members participating in some way. This is expected to include local activities in local groups as well as participation in general meetings of the several groups. SGW will also emphasize membership 10 and 50 although everyone will be encouraged to join. "Old timers" will be expected to teach younger or new members and vice versa. The sharing of skills, tools, materials and more between members will be encouraged. Membership will be offered to non – railroaders too including anyone at all who is interested. Persons actively modeling railroads in any scale, by any manufacturer, in any era, will be more than welcome to join and add to the experience and expertise base, although S gauge will remain as the central and active focus of the organization.

Currently (see the BSG club column at Yahoo as well) the club has a simple, flat, portable, 6 X 8, antique layout for all 3 – rail trains and tinplate. This layout needs help in the form of having more trains to run and additional buildings, semaphores, lights, crossing gates, tunnels or whatever from the era of the 30’s and 40’s. Anyone having trains to run, or even show, is welcome to bring them whenever and wherever the layout is taken for show and tell starting at MAD CITY. If anyone could see their way clear to loan SGW buildings, etc. for shows, SGW would be most grateful as well. Another start - up project we are working on for exhibition is an American Flyer All Aboard layout. Finally, the club is actively building a very lightweight, portable large modular layout which will, when complete, allow operation of any and all S gauge trains since the 3 – rail era including AC, DC and DCC by any manufacturer. This layout will be managed and operated by the Madison subdivision.

The club is going to offer several levels of membership. Currently, Charter Memberships are available and additional memberships will be brought on line very soon. SGW will be at the MAD CITY, which will be the first outing for the group. SEE US THERE!! Or, if you are interested, wherever you are in the state (we are looking to organize local groups), contact SGW as follows: S Gauge Wisconsin Jim Sanborn 717 N. "Playtime /Traintime"

Steve Lunde has held two of these nights so far. No one else has tried this. It was a lot of fun at Steve’s just running trains and trading ideas. Fun. Fun. Fun. Any volunteers.

Dick Kloes has offered his basement as the BSG modular layout workshop. Members will be meeting at his home to work on the club sections. All club members are welcomed to these gatherings. They will take place every Thursday evening starting around 6:30 or 7:00 pm until further notice. This is your chance to observe, learn or even participate in fixing up the modular layout. If you haven’t seen the progress so far you will be amazed. This is also an opportunity to have some fun. B.Y.O.B.O.C. Translation: Bring your own beverage of choice. We have had a couple sessions so far and it’s been a blast.

BSG Tips Column

A bit of information was passed on to me at a swap meet. I haven’t tried this but this is what I heard. Many of us use lichen on our layouts. It has a tendency to dry out on occasion. An individual told me that it is highly flammable in that condition and virtually flashes up. If you would like to try this let me know about the results. I’ll be dammed if I’m going to try it.

While I was packing up at Mad-City last year, as I took my lichen trees off the layout, I found that they were hard as a board. If I had squeezed them in my palm they would have crumbled into a million little pieces. I’m not really clear why they hardened up in Madison outside of the fact that it was February and the building might have been dry.

The following day I took my layout to the Mitchell Park Domes and stored the layout there for about three days before we set it up. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Domes, they are a year-round horticultural conservatory center. I was really surprised when I took them out of the boxes fearing the worst had happened during transportation. They were as soft and pliable as ever. I’ve heard of the glycerin treatment, but just not the simple effect of humidity on lichen. It sure worked for me.

Please! Please! Pretty Please. If any of you have any tips for your fellow model railroaders send them to the BSG Newsletter Editor.

BSG Yahoo Group E-Mail

Badgerland@yahoogroups.com,

Join this group you will receive periodic club updates, BSG news, tips and information on various S gauge websites that may be of interest to you.

Note:

I’ve noticed that our yahoo group is not really used that much. Chuck Porter adds some interesting links once and a while and Fred Vergenz puts in reminders of meetings and other events. Other than that it is hardly used.

I belong to another yahoo sight, which I won’t mention. (It’s not what you might be thinking, it’s clean.) There are times when one of these types of sights can be a bit irritating. This other one that I belong to had members going on and on and on regarding an inane topic. It filled my inbox with forty or fifty emails. I know that interfacing with others is a good thing. However I have found out that there are some individuals with absolutely nothing else to do. They are lonely hearts just looking for a chat line.

However don’t let one old man’s comments get in the way of you using our site. We have had some really neat train stuff and links to great S gauge layouts. Keep it up.
