34th Year Issue #253 September 2008 Published by B.S.G

Fall S Fest Is Upon Us, BSG Starts 34th Season

********************************************************************************************************************

A Message From The BSG President

It is that time again, yes every four years we get a chance to host Fall S-Fest and 2008 is our year. S-Fest is quite an undertaking and can only be done with help of all of our members. I know that’s all you hear at our meetings, we need help with this, help with that. I know it gets old. I don’t care what you may or may not help with during the years, but now is the time I really need it. It is just once every four years, this is our S-Fest. At the next two meeting before S-Fest, we will have a signup sheet for you to sign up and volunteer. This sheet will have duties and a time period. You can help for as little as two hours! The bulk of the help will be required on Friday morning. Such duties as helping vendors unload and set up, watching the entrance doors, etc. After we open, we will need help with registration, distributing the S-Fest cars, watching the model contest, selling raffle tickets and a host of other duties. Sign up for as much as you can, but please sign up for the absolute minimum of 2 hours.

I sincerely hope you will all step up to the plate and give a hand. If you cannot attend a meeting, please contact Kim Young, 262-250-0618, e-mail: youngsjk4@wi.rr.com, and sign up.

Thanks,

Steve Lunde

President

2008 S-Fest Chairman

Fall S Fest

"Special Reminder"

BSG is offering a reduced rate at the Wyndham Hotel. There are various other forms of attaining a discount at this hotel. If you are able to obtain a different rate, by any other means, please, please still inform the desk clerk that you are there for Fall S Fest. Our club will still get credit for a room night. If we do not meet the amount of rooms that we contracted for, we will have to pay for the remainder of unused rooms. This is very important to the financial success of this event. Don’t forget to mention that you are at the hotel for Fall S Fest.

April Meeting

Saturday April 19, 2008

Roy Meissner’s

Merton, WI

Attendance:

I misplaced the attendance list for the last meeting. There were the usual 10 members who have attended meetings for the last couple of decades. Then there were the five or six who attend a majority of the meetings. I have no idea who else was there. Memory issues are becoming a problem.

Treasurer’s Report

The items listed below are the expenses incurred over the past summer months. This report does not include the BSG April expenses as I also cannot find that listing. It is the same memory issue that was related in the above report.

a) New Member Name Tag $10.93
b) Swap Meet Hall Rental Deposit $300.00
c) Modular Layout Supplies$104.71
d) BSG Picnic Supplies 157.04
e) Fall S Fest S Gaugian Ad
$304.50
f) Fall S Fest Banquet Cars $522.50
g) Fall S Fest Mailing Postage $504.00
h) Fall S Fest 2008 Cars
$11,793.60

BSG Picnic Report

BSG once again had a summer picnic. Roy Meissner organized this year’s event. Mac McGrath helped Roy with all of the amenities. There was an ample supply of hamburgers, hotdogs, brats, beverages and all kinds of other goodies. Roy managed to reserve Pollworth Park in Merton. This is a first class facility and we will probably hold picnics at this location in the future. The weather was a bit strange. When I left my home it was in the mid to upper 80’s. By the time I got to the park I was in need of a sweat shirt. However the weather pattern did shift and it turned out to be a very pleasant day.

It also was Donald Goeke’s birthday so he had to blow out the candles on his cake. Since we did not have a meeting at the picnic, we only needed one person to blowhard.

Once again special thanks to Roy and Mac and to all of those who brought food for the soul and the stomach.

The attendance was around 28 people. I can’t be sure of that because I cannot find the attendance list that I compiled. Just another memory issue Oops.

Meeting Reports

Steve Lunde opened the April BSG general meeting. There was a brief discussion on the amount of Fall S Fest cars sold. Initially there has been a very positive response to the car selection. As a result two additional car numbers have been ordered. For those of you who collect S Fest cars and have already ordered a set of three, you just have to have the additional #3304 and #3305 cars.

We strongly encourage that any of our out-of-town members, who plan on staying in town for Fall S Fest 2008, to register at the Wyndham Milwaukee Airport Hotel.

There is more than enough information for Fall S Fest 2008 on our website for all of you to be able to come to this year’s event. Be sure to visit us at www.trainweb.org/bsg for updates.

This November will be a rather eventful month for BSG and for me personally. Along with Trainfest, S Fest activities, church activities, out of town activities, hosting a meeting and trying to get my layout operational after a massive expansion, it will be an extremely challenging period of time. If there are any questions that you have, number one read your newsletters, and number two check our website or number three contact the appropriate officers. I’m getting a little burned out. I am not the answer all man for BSG. Please excuse me if I seem in a hurry at times and don’t mean to sound short tempered.

Dick Kloes gave a brief report on the last swap meet of the year. We will only have six meets for the upcoming season dropping the September meet. Dick also noted that the income has been decreasing over the past couple of years. There have been a few meets where the revenue, versus the amount of resources and work required, have hardly made the meet worth holding. With the level of membership participation, along with the afore mentioned circumstances, Dick may discontinue the swap meets. The "good old days" are gone and we may have to look for other sources of income. The Wisconsin Department of Revenue getting involved and requiring forms sent in listing all participant sellers have had a bit more of an impact than anticipated. When you say Wisconsin the word taxes is encrypted somehow.

Modular Layout Report

Dick Kloes also gave a report on the modular layout. He talked about the workshops that he was holding at his home. Dick has continued to work on the two new four-foot end modules that Ray Puls constructed. The club owns an additional 16 feet that require a massive renovation. They can then be used on the layout. Chic Hartert has volunteered to make trees for the modular layout. We will still need additional help in order to get our equipment to and from the various shows that we attend. The modular layout is not Dick Kloes’s. It is the club’s.

The National NMRA convention will be held at the Midwest Express Center in downtown Milwaukee in 2010. If we even want to be invited there and want to represent S gauge in a good light, the layout will have to improve. Regarding that convention Gary Children is the director of the home layout tours. He has requested that a few of our members participate in the event. He also gave some of the details about the upcoming convention.

Art Doty gave a report on, in state and out of state, model railroading activities around the country.

Ron Schlicht gave a brief report on upcoming Titletown model railroading show in Green Bay Wisconsin. Ron took the small layout and added the additional AF accessories table. The show had a pretty good turnout and the layout ran pretty well. Once again I would like to thank all that helped out at this show. Without a bit more assistance I don’t know how long that I will be able to do all of the shows that I do. If it wouldn’t be for the help that Rich Eveleth provides, I believe that I would have to pass on most of them. Whether you like HI-Rail or not my small layout gets more attention than most of the layouts at the shows. After all it is owned and operated by a "child" for other children. The layout has been termed "cross-generational" by most.

Dick Kloes is currently housing the existing small (swap meet) layout. Some of the rolling stock and engines are in need of repair. Steve Lunde has offered to do this. They will have to be AC/DC compatible.

More 2008 Fall S Fest

If you know of any sources that would like to get their name or establishment published on our list of contributors and would be interested in donating an item or two contact them. If you have any items contact Steve Lunde. Items do not have to be railroad related articles. Tools, sport, garden, automotive implements that you use around your house are great. New not used.

Again there was a brief discussion on various items in the clubs inventory that could be used for S Fest door prizes and auctions.

We still have some past Fall S Fest heavyweight car bodies that will be offered to club members only. They will be sold at very reasonable prices. Many of the items will be brought to future meetings for member’s consideration. If you are interested and wish to see them, attend a meeting.

My apologies to all of you Packer and Bears fans. Since no one volunteered for an "at their home meeting" this day, date and location was the only option.

As I have previously mentioned regarding meeting hosts, we have 7 general meetings per year. Typically there are 4 members who have hosted one every year. We are struggling to find meeting locations. Admittedly it is difficult for some, when up to 25 people might attend a meeting. The normal average is around 15.

"Editors Comments"

OK it has been a while since you received one of my poison pen letters, be grateful. BSG is officially starting our 34th season of existence. It’s hard to believe that over half of my life I have been in this club. Having suffered the slings and arrows of being an officer for 25 consecutive seasons and newsletter editor for nearly 24 years it may be time for change. OBAMA! OBAMA! OBAMA! On second thought he wouldn’t want the job, S gaugers don’t have much of an audience or following. John McCain wouldn’t want that long of a term. For that matter he probably wouldn’t even live through it. Perhaps at this year’s Fall S Fest we can make the banquet a political BSG officer’s convention. Speeches, goofy hats (we already have one) or promises for a brighter future for BSG. We could have a senior citizens chapter. Forget that idea. We have had that for some time now. It’s what we are. We could have a swingers group ages 45 to 60 years old. We could call them the youth movement. Maybe we should change our junior’s age to 35 and under. There aren’t many of those. Well so much for campaigning for a new candidate for a new newsletter editor. Just keep those candidates and volunteers calling me. You know my phone number and email address. Yeah.

Roy Meissner hosted the April BSG general meeting. His layout progress is moving along. The only thing that can be said about his engines and rolling stock is WOW!

Fred Keller historian of the township of Lisbon & village of Sussex gave a very entertaining presentation and slide show on his personal experiences with the "Trains of Lisbon & Sussex".

The clinics held before or after meetings really give members more of a purpose or desire to attend a BSG meetings.

We will need a presentation for our October, December, January, Etc. meetings. If you would like to volunteer or know of a guest presenter, Contact:

Special Notice

"Playtime /Traintime"

Dick Kloes’s home will reopen for the BSG modular layout workshop sessions. In spite of his recent by-pass surgery Dick has been working on the layout. Even before his surgery he always had the offer open to work on the layout as outlined in past newsletters. Only about four individuals took him up on the offer (the usual suspects). The layout "will" be improved by Trainfest. Ray Puls constructed new end sections and with the work that Dick has put into them and the corners the layout has a dramatic change in appearance. The layout configuration will also be different. The width will be standardized and cast in concrete at 14 feet wide (without stanchions).. The only future changes in size will be in the length of the layout depending on how many members participate by bringing modules. This year’s Trainfest layout will be smaller than in the past. In the future only completed modules with compatible backdrops will be utilized.

New Product Review

I have no new products to report at this time of which I have actually had in my hands. This year’s American Flyer offerings in the new Lionel catalog have been fewer than in the past. There are three A.C. Gilbert, American Flyer commemorative cars that I think are pretty neat. I like the paint scheme and will probably get some. (Has anyone ever gotten one of those "Big Boys’.) Another item; Do not forget those Christmas cars. Thank God I never got hooked on those gems, Yikes. For all of you circus nuts K-Line has even more offerings for this year in their catalog. Many of their items are closer to S than O gauge.

If you purchase any new items currently on the market, please notify your editor as to how you feel about the products quality, appeal and performance. If possible, please include a Word document that I can paste into the newsletter.
