Carolinas Association for Passenger Trains

Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley Railroad Depot, c.1890.

This historic station is currently undergoing a multi-million dollar restoration and will be use as a visitors center and regional transportation museum when completed. It will be the focus of an on-site tour and briefing Friday afternoon (28 March) at 4:00 PM. Please indicate on the registration form if you plan to participate. The Amtrak consist was in place as part of NCDOT Secretary of Transportation Lyndo Tippett's presentation of the Southeastern North Carolina Passenger Rail Plan (see www.bytrain.org). The track is being considered for a future heritage trolley line between the central business district and the Cape Fear River.

Charlotte Trolley
NARP members returning on Train 19 Sunday night (actually early morning) will be treated to an evening excursion on the Charlotte Trolley. At the end of the line is the famous South End Brewery & Restaurant where you will be able to satisfy any late night cravings that you might have. Later, you will be treated to a tour of Amtrak's new Charlotte mail handling facility. The trolleys are now powered by towed generator cars but by March the overhead wire should be strung (notice the line-side poles). The previous jointed rail and wooden ties have been replaced by CWR and concrete ties to accommodate future LRT (scheduled for completion in 2006 - note the reserve for a second track).

Aberdeen & Rockfish
Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad GP-7, number 205, running light in the Williams Street Yard, where CSX, Norfolk Southern and the A&R interchange. The yard is across the street and three blocks from the Radisson Prince Charles Hotel. The A&R, founded in 1892 by John Blue (note name on hood beneath headlamps), is still owned and operated by his descendants. Does not typically operate on Saturdays and Sundays.
