The Central Operating Lines, Ltd. Model Railroad Club was formed in 1976 by a small group of dedicated train collectors who wanted a place to run their trains, someplace more than a small home layout. The club set up shop in the basement of a shoe store in Amityville, New York. This was the club's first layout, and featured four operating mainlines and a gigantic mountain. In 1982, the owner of the shoe store decided to retire and sell the building, so the club was forced to move out.

It took us over a year to find a new home. In 1983, we constructed our second layout, which was now in the basement of an architectural firm in Babylon, New York. We decided to expand our layout, and it was even bigger and ran better than the one in Amityville. It featured four cab-controlled mainlines with a dispatcher's panel, a passenger yard, and a hidden setup yard inside the mountain.

However, in 1993, the architectural firm decided it needed the basement for records storage. We were on the move again, this time to a small industrial park in Holbrook, New York. Our third layout was actually smaller than Babylon's, but still had some interesting features, including an engine terminal with an operating turntable.

Then in 1996, the club lost its lease in Holbrook and moved to what is now our current location in Ronkonkoma, New York. Our fourth operating layout includes four block-controlled mainlines, a bi-level passenger terminal, the engine terminal from Holbrook, a medium-sized mountain and the Lionel Command Control system. Work is in progress on many areas of the layout, and many new projects are currently underway, including a custom-made passenger terminal, staging yard and a prototypical signaling system.
