The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Red Unit Circus Train at Irvine 8/5/2013

by Chris Guenzler

I decided after my trip to San Mateo Point this morning, that I should try to cover the Circus Train's move to San Diego. This train is the Red Unit with Union Pacific 4436, 4569 and 4415 for power with 59 cars: 4 stocks, 34 coaches, 2 COFC and 19 flats for a total of 252 axles less power.

I took Metrolink 634 from Santa Ana to Irvine then camped out on the bridge, calling several people but Tom Anderson had a clear view of the tracks from his office in Anaheim, so he said he would call me once he saw it.

The first train I photographed was Pacific Surfliner 579 heading to Los Angeles Union Station.

Next one was Metrolink 812.

That was followed by Metrolink 641.

Metrolink 609 on its way to Los Angeles, after which Tom called and said the Circus Train was leaving Anaheim.

Next there was a red-over-yellow for the siding at CP Bake. I saw two headlights coming after Metrolink 806 departed for San Bernardino and once I saw the train starting to cross over, knew it was the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Red Unit Circus Train. Now enjoy the views I took.

There you have it, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Red Unit Circus Train went into the siding at CP Bake to wait for the Metrolink rush to be over before heading to San Diego. I now had to get home but was surprised when my train arrived.

Metrolink 689 had their lone F40PH 800 which would take me home to Santa Ana.
