A Morning at San Mateo Point 8/5/2013

by Chris Guenzler

I arose at 5:10 AM and after a quick breakfast, I drove south on Interstate 5 to Cristianitos Road then turned right on El Camino Road, made a U-turn and parked the van. I followed two lady surfers to the trailhead then hiked down to old US 101 Highway to San Mateo Point and walked out to the bench, waiting for my first train of the morning.

The setting on this overcast morning.

Metrolink 803 came beneath San Mateo Point, after which I changed my location by 100 feet.

The next setting on this overcast morning and a new photo location.

Metrolink 607. Now I waited for my first Amtrak train of the morning.

You can enjoy the waves and surfers as you wait for trains here.

Pacific Surfliner 763; I then moved south on the bluff.

This was another new photo location.

A surfer riding the wave.

Pacific Surfliner 562. Next I set up for Metrolink 850.

The supports under the San Onofre Creek Trestle were being replaced.

Metrolink 850 crossed San Onofre Creek Trestle on its way to Riverside. I returned to my southbound photo location.

Still watching the surfers below me here.

My last train of the morning was Pacific Surfliner 565. From here I hiked back to the van then returned to my home in Santa Ana.
