NRHS Spring Conference Meetings and the Journey Home 5/3-5/2025

by Chris Guenzler

We arose at the Holiday Inn and went downstairs for breakfast where I had waffles and bacon then joined the plenary session of the Spring Conference meetings via Zoom from our room as Elizabeth was recovering from something that had not agreed with her yesterday. In the break, we drove to the Carnegie Hotel and joined the meetings in person, where my wife partook in her duties as Secretary of the Advisory Council.

As with all meetings at a conference or convention, members can join remotely via video conference. After the Advisory Council meeting was a lunch break followed by the Board meeting and we enjoyed them both. It was announced that the autumn conference would be hosted by the Wisconsin Chapter on October 3rd and 4th; they are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year. Once the meeting was over, we went for an early dinner at Cheddars Scratch Kitchen, where I had a steak and my loving wife had pork chops, thene we returned the hotel for the night.

5/4/3025 We checked e-mail then checked out and I drove to Eggs Up Grill and I had a Belgian waffle while Elizabeth had toast and fruit then we made our way to Carthage Junction and the only station of the day.

Carthage Junction Depot information board which states: The Carthage Junction Depot has been a landmark for Smith County since the late 1800's, moving passengers and delivering freight and mail along the Tennessee Central Railroad. It was because of this depot that we were able to send our WWI and WWII veterans overseas to leave for training to allow them to defend our country, returning to this same spot after war. After passenger traffic ceased, the depot was vacant for many years, later facing demolition. The building was purchased and relocated to Gordonsville in the 1970's. After local businesses had vacated, the building was facing demolition again. KFC/Taco Bell donated the historic building to Smith County and Smith County donated this piece of property in South Carthage to ensure the safety of the depot. The original depot structure will be used for an internet cafe, train and history museum, and a local arts gallery. An additional structure will be built behind the Depot designed to replicate the South Carthage Depot. This building will house space for a kitchen and restrooms in hopes to see a local cafe. In the lower portion of this building will be additional restrooms and a space to rent kayaks. TWRA is working with Smith County to build a kayak access on the river directly behind the Depot.

Smith County Points of Interest, which includes the depot. I drove to the next rest area on Interstate 40 then Elizabeth continued to the rest area after Clarkdale and I drove us to Evansville, where we checked into the Fairfield Inn then Elizabeth drove to Jersey Mike's for dinner and I returned us to the hotel for tonight.

After our usual morning preparations, we checked out and Elizabeth drove to Bob Evans then to the last rest area in Illinois and into St. Charles, Missouri, where we stocked up on a variety of items at the Engish Store. I then drove to the Wright City rest area and Elizabeth resumed the journey back to Columbia and we arrived home at 6:15 PM.
