Special Trains through the Years Part 2 2000-2006

Amtrak was a sponsor of the US Postal Train in 2000.





Union Pacific 3985 at the 2001 National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) convention in St Louis. A photo runby was performed at Gorham, Illinois on 6/20/2001.





The second mainline steam trip of the convention had Frisco 1522 running to West Quincy on 6/22/2001 with a runby at Ilasco, Missouri.





The last trip of the 2001 convention included Frisco 1522 performing a runby in Newberg on 6/23/2001.

Over the years, the Orange Empire Railway Museum has operated a few trips over Santa Fe's San Jacinto Line such as this trip to Highgrove on 5/11/2002.





Milwaukee Road 261 made a photo runby on the way to Duluth on 5/18/2002.





Milwaukee Road 261 ran a two-day trip to Chicago with a runby on Day One 6/19/2002.





Union Pacific 3985 ran a two-day excursion on the former Rock Island Spine Line from South St Paul to Kansas City, Missouri. Here is a photo runby on Day One on 6/22/2002.

The Friends of the 261 and Lake Superior Railroad Museum sponsored a rare mileage trip on the Erie Mining Railroad on 9/21/2002.





All-private car Super Bowl Special heading for San Diego on 1/31/2003.





I rode Holland America's new dome Cars from Glendale to Santa Barbara on 4/4/2003 on a special train.





I rode the Colorado Rail Car DMU from Fullerton to Irvine and back as a special movement on 6/27/2003.





I took the rare mileage trip sponsored by the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum from Payette to Cascade, Idaho on 8/8/2003.





Metrolink ran its first Thanksgiving Day Orange County-Inland Empire Service on 11/27/2003.





The Carrizo Gorge Railway ran a special to the Goat Creek Trestle from Jacumba on 12/6/2003.





Metrolink ran a New Year's Day Train on 1/1/04 on the Surf Line to transport people to the Rose Parade via the Pasadena Gold Line. I used it to do an all-rail connection to Pacific Surfliner 761, the LAX to Santa Barbara weekend special Surfliner train service.





I was invited by the Christmastrain.org to write about the Three Kings Train from Campo to Tecate, Mexico where over 5,000 gift bags were handed out to the children there on 1/14/04.





The day after Winterail 2004, the Sierra Railroad ran a railfan trip from Oakdale to Cooperstown and return on 2/14/04.





I was invited for the last leg of the Sierra Coast Limited from Santa Barbara to the Amtrak coach yards in Los Angeles on 5/17/04.





The Southern Appalachia Railway Museum sponsored four rare mileage trips over four days in May 2004. The first was the Eagle Cap Limited on the Wallowa Union Railroad on 5/22/2004. Here was a photo runby done in the pouring rain.





The following day, we rode the Pend Orielle Valley Railroad from Newport, Washington to Metaline Falls then back to Ione. Here our train switching in Newport prior to leaving as the Pend Orielle Hiawatha on 5/23/2004.





The next evening we were west of Lewistown, Montana where we boarded the Judith Basin Dinner Train for the rare mileage to Moccasin Jct on the Central Montana Rail on 5/24/2004.





The final trip was on the rest of the Central Montana Rail as the Jawbone Express to Geraldine on 5/25/2004. Here our train is doing one of the photo runbys of the day.





Santa Fe 3751 made a special run out to the restored San Bernardino Station on 6/12/2004. Here the train is eastbound at El Monte.





Milwaukee Road 261 pulled the Grand Excursion 2004, of which I rode almost all the trips. Here the train is leaving Union Station in Chicago to a layover location after pulling me from Milwaukee to Chicago on 6/22/2004.





Canadian Pacific Railway 2816 and Milwaukee Road 261 pulled off a great double-heading trip from St Paul to La Crescent and return on 7/3/2004. What a chase this trip was, including a fantastic rain storm.





I rode the four-day trip behind Canadian Pacific 2816 from Minneapolis to Portal, North Dakota. Here is a beautiful train after completing the first day run at Glenwood, MN on 7/6/2004.

On Saturday 4/2/2005, I took the Technical Tour of the Alameda Corridor at the 2005 APTA Commuter Rail Conference.





Here is the Metrolink train that took us down the Alameda Corridor and was the first Metrolink train to San Pedro.





San Diego Electric Railway Association ran the San Diego Green Line Extension Special on 6/25/2005, two weeks before it opened to the public. Here is our train at the underground San Diego State station.





Trains Unlimited Tours Pacific Northwest Express departed with me on it on 7/2/2005.





Part of the Trains Unlimited Tours Pacific Northwest Express was a photo chance with the McCloud 18 on a photo freight early on 7/3/2005.





Our Trains Unlimited Tours Pacific Northwest Express at a photo runby on the Suislaw River Drawbridge. This train got me to Portland for the 2005 NRHS convention.

Drew Jacksich caught our 2005 NRHS Convention Port of Tillamook Bay Train on 7/7/2005 at the Summit at Cochran. My camera died right before this trip started so "BNSFbob" and Drew Jacksich let me use some of their pictures for my story. A very special thank you to both of these very talented photographers.





The 2005 NRHS convention Mt Rainier Scenic Railroad Special on 7/9/2005 as we were treated to an excellent pair of photo runbys.





For the re-launching of the Empire Builder service, the Beech Grove and Great Dome carried Amtrak President David Gunn and invited guests aboard the rear of the train. Here are the cars at rest at Havre on 8/22/2005.





Trains Unlimited Tours ran their Domes to the Feather River Days on 8/28/2005.





The Southern Appalachia Railway Museum ran three days of rare mileage trips on the Georgia Southwestern Railroad. On the first day of the trip, we stopped and did a photo runby at MP 15.2 on their Ellaville Sub-Division on 11/19/2005.





Fillmore & Western ran the first passenger train to Piru, California on 3/18/2006.





The Central Coast Chapter of the NRHS ran the Feather River Express from Emeryville to Portola, California. Here is view of the westbound trip at the Honeymoon Tunnel deep inside the Feather River Canyon on 4/2/2006.





The Southern Appalachia Railway Museum ran a rare mileage trip from Banks to Tillamook on the Port of Tillamook Railroad on 6/6/2006.

The Southern Appalachia Railway Museum ran a steam charter over Tacoma Rail from Morton to Tacoma on 6/8/2006.

Spokane, Portland and Seattle 700 gave rides through Oaks Park in Portland, Oregon on 6/10/2006.
