by Chris Guenzler

The train was running along near Sublette.

The Rio de los Pinos.

The water column at Sublette with a track speeder in this view.

There are many buildings at Sublette.

We leave Sublette and a change in plant life with be noticeable.

The train takes yet another curve.

One last look at Sublette.

There are many interesting rock formations across the canyon.

Three views looking down at the Rio de los Pinos.

The vegetation has gotten drier.

You get a great view of the San Antonio Shield Volcano in New Mexico.

The train went by Bighorn Peak.

The train approaching Bighorn Peak.

I always like trees and this route has many varieties.

The train took a pair of curves.

The train came to Big Horn Siding.

The train ran by the Big Horn Wye.

Two more views of Big Horn.

A look at the tracks where we will be in a few minutes.

The bottom of Whiplash Curve.

Two views looking out into the San Luis Valley.

There is a storm out to the north complete with many flashes of lightning.

The train was rounding the bottom of Whiplash Curve.

Our train went by the New Mexico sign.

View of the storm clouds.

The train was heading to Lava.

The view out into the San Luis Valley.

The rain is pouring out of those clouds.

The view looking south.

On the Lava Loop was a ballast train.

Not every day you get to see a steam powered ballast train.

The train went by the Lava Water Tower.

Our engine did a blow down at Lava on a curve there.

Looking back upgrade at the Lava Water Tower.

Four views of the ballast train at Lava.

The train came to the curve near MP 288.

A final look at that ballast train with the Lava Water Tower and San Antonio Mountain.

Our train was heading into the storm.

Our train ran by the Colorado Sign. That makes the eleventh time we crossed the New Mexico/Colorado State Line.

Views of the storms ahead of our train complete with lightning and pouring rain. I hoped we could get to Antonito before it starts.

The train took another curve as we near Antonito.

Indiana Jones fans might remember this area as it was the circus train scene that was filmed along here. Sure enough as we almost got to Antonio the sky let loose with pouring rain.

The train arrived into Antonito in the pouring rain. This ends an excellent trip aboard the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad. We ran to the car in the pouring rain as it started to hail as we neared the car. We drove back to Alamosa and went to the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad to try to pick up our tickets for tomorrow's trip. We were told to come back in the morning. Since we were here, we decided to look around outside.

A San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad engine.

The Rio Grande Scenic 18.

The Rio Grande Scenic 18 is being filled with water.

Two more views of the Rio Grande Scenic 18 that would be pulling our train to La Veta tomorrow.

The Rio Grande Scenic 17 in two pieces. We returned to the Best Western Alamosa Inn and after a KFC Dinner, I watched Doctor Who before I called it a night.
