Durango & Silverton Railroad 7/17/2008 Part 2

by Chris Guenzler

We continue our train trip along the Animas River.

The train still working hard on the climb to Silverton.

The valley opened up for a moment allowing good views both ways.

The train was rolling along the Animas River.

A look back.

The train went by the restored Needleton Water Tank. We stopped to take water here from a former tank car.

As we left Needleton, you can see the former tank car we used to water the steam engine back in the trees.

The train was running along the tumbling Animas River.

Mt. Garfield could be seen from our train.

Two more views of our train along the Animas River.

Our passageway to Silverton lays ahead.

The rain started again.

The Animas River could be seen through the plant growth.

Our train continues to roll along up the grade.

A look before the rain let up again.

The train crossed the Animas River.

A very nice family from Seattle huddling for warmth on a very cold morning along the Animas River.

The train stopped at Elk Park to let off several hikers, two who used the wye track as a path away from the train.

Looking up a side canyon to the east.

The Grand Turk Mountain could be seen from our train.

The train is running along the Animas River.

Another view of the Grand Turk Mountain.

The Cleveland Slide with the Grand Turk Mountain in this view.

Another look back. With all this beauty, the open car is the only way to go for a trip on this fantastic railroad.

Our engine is working hard the final miles as we near Silverton.

Great views can be yours for just the price of a train ticket on the Durango & Silverton Railroad.

The train, river and mountain views, what more could you ask for in a train trip?

The train continues to climb to ever changing views.

Looking back as the Animas River Canyon narrows.

Two views looking ahead at our train.

Looking back behind us once more.

The train was running along the Animas River.

Two more views of our train climbing along the Animas River. I really love riding this narrow gauge railroad.

The train was rolling along the Animas River.

Our train just keeps rolling along the Animas River.

More great rapids in the Animas River.

Trees cling to the canyon walls for their survival.

The canyon really narrowed here as our train passed through the gap the Animas River had cut.

Less than a mile left in the Animas River Canyon.

The first view of the waterfall coming off the west slope of the canyon.

The valley opens up as we near our final destination.

That same waterfall coming down from the slope to our west. You get three different views of this waterfall as the train rolls along.

The train crossed the Animas River for the final time on our trip to Silverton.

The Champion Mine on the side of the hill.

Arvil Mountain stands behind Silverton.

Engine 493 is on display in Silverton.

The train went by the Silverton Station.

The train takes the final turn into Silverton.

The train runs up 12th Street to Blair Street where the tracks end and we will detrain.

The train has arrived into Silverton and it is now time to get some lunch.
