Railfanning Kansas City 4/1993

4/11/93 Bill Compton and I arrived into Kansas City via Amtrak from New Orleans and St Louis. Bill got the rental car while I watched the luggage. He picked me up and we headed south of town to Grandview where we set up to catch our first train of the day along the Kansas City Southern.





A KCS Train with UP 9300 on the point passed through Grandview, MO.





Next we caught KCS 745 South at Belton, MO.





KCS with Oakway 9040 North was our next train at Cleveland, MO.





The same as above at Belton. That night we saw the Kansas City Royals play the Minnesota Twins.

4/12/93



The next day at Grandview the first train of the day was KCS 632 south. Next we headed over to the joint Union Pacific/ Southern Pacific ex Rock Island mainline for some action west of Kansas City on this beautiful April morning.





We then went to Loring, KS for the UP 3911 West.





DRGW 5348 East came through Loring next.





The DRGW 5348 as another UP stack train came west at Loring.





After that stack train came SP 8058 West at Loring.





Next came UP 9450 East through Loring.





Right behind him was the UP 9351 East.





He was followed by the UP 6183 East at Loring.





The SP 8003 East was next at Loring. We relocated to Bonner Springs.





Here is SP 8003 East again at Bonner Springs.





SP 7516 East along the Kansas River at Bonner Springs.





We moved to Lenape, KS to catch UP 9255 West.





UP 9411 East at Lenape. From here we left the UP for Holiday, KS and some Santa Fe action on their mainline west of Kansas City.

Santa Fe 877 West at Holiday.





Santa Fe 9543 West at Holiday. We moved to Olathe, KS for our next train.





Santa Fe 887 West at Olathe. Next we went south to Bonita, KS for some BN/UP freight train action on the ex MKT/SLSF mainline.





A BN local with BN 2137 south at Bonita, KS in the siding there. He was passed by UP{CSX} 8478 North which we followed to Charlie, KS.





CSX 8478 North at Charlie. After a few more pictures of him we called it a day.

4/13/1993

The next morning we went to Birmingham, MO to the crossing of the NS/BN with the Soo/CNW ex Rock Island Spine Line.





NS 8358 East was our first train of the day after sunrise.





Next CNW 6640 West came through Birmingham.





BN LMX 8551 West was next through Birmingham.





Behind him came SP 8530 West across the crossing at Birmingham.

Next came Soo Line 789 West through Birmingham on this busy morning.





NS 8516 East was the next train through Birmingham.







SOO Line 746 West with ex Milwaukee Road Bandit GP-40 2038 in the consist.





Soo line 6035 East next rolled through Birmingham.





Soo Line SD-60 6035 sported a new Soo paint scheme.





Soo Line 6035 East even had Soo Line Caboose 102 bringing up the rear end. After that train we followed the NS line east passed the junction where the BN line for Quincy left At Maxwell, MO and onto Camden where the NS joined the Santa Fe mainline to see some train here.

NS 8570 on a ballast train at Camden.





NS 1683 East at Henerieta, MO.





Santa Fe 837 West at Henerieta, MO.





Santa Fe 4025 East at Camden, MO.





We went back to Orrick, MO to catch the NS 6641 East.





Next came NS 8712 West.





NS 8712 West had a BN unit plus a Grand Trunk Western SD-40 5926.





At South Liberty we caught NS 6187 East.





We returned to Birmingham to catch Soo Line 4515 West.





NS 8508 East was the last train of this day at Birmingham.

4/14/1993

This morning we would start off by heading north out of Kansas City to the BN Line that runs to Lincoln, NE one of BN's main coal line from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming.





We caught BN 2304 West at Rushville, MO right before sunrise.





Another view of BN 2304 West north of Rushville. Looking for trains we crossed the Missouri River to Atchison, KS.





In Atchison we found the UP 2251 West. We drove back into Missouri to continue hunting for trains.





KCS 724 East with a long coal train at Rushville.





Behind him came the KCS 732 East through Rushville. We followed him south.





KCS 732 East at Iatan, MO.





BN 7033 East at Iatan, MO. From here we then headed southwest of Kansas City for more action on that joint BN/UP Line we were at a couple of days ago.

BN LMX 8526 East at Bonita, KS.





BN 6795 West at Bonita.





Wrecks do happen and here is the remains of one at Springhill, KS.

Along for the ride on BN 2755 East was Conrail SD-40-2 6261 at Bonita.





BN 7108 West also at Bonita.





Behind him right after sunset was UP 972 West. We called it a day after that shot.

4/15/1993

Our last full day in Kansas City had us stopping at Knoche Yard.





Here was KCS SD-40-2 657.





Also at Knoche Yard was KCS SD-40-2 651. We then moved to Southwest Junction.







KCS Oakway 9079 East passed through Southwest Junction. We went on a short chase of that train and got off the freeway at Gregory Blvd.





KCS Oakway 9075 East crossed the Gregory Blvd Viaduct. From here we went to the West Bottoms in search of more trains.

UP Turbine 18B. We drove back into Kansas and went up a hill overlooking Santa Fe Jct.

CNW 6831 West and Santa Fe 4022 East with a BN coal train also in this view at State Line Jct. After those trains we headed over to Bonner Springs as the weather started to turn bad.

SP 7022 West during a downpour at Bonner Springs. We heard on the scanner that a hailstorm was coming so we quickly got under a bridge and waited out the storm. Bill returned me to Amtrak before he returned the rental car as the storm continued to rage.







Kansas City Terminal SW-1200's ran by the Kansas City Amtrak Station in the storm. When Bill returned we went to Crown Center for some dinner and a movie before returning to the station to board the Southwest Chief ending an unique adventure in Kansas City.
