The Coast Starlight Detour down the former SP Valley Line 10/26/2008 Part 2

by Chris Guenzler

The Coast Starlight headed south from the Calwa Crossing along old California Highway 99.

Let the vineyards be fruitful.

This is the former Southern Pacific Station from Fowler.

The train ran by the Kingsburg Southern Pacific Station.

Our train crossed the Kings River south of Kingsburg.

There was a San Joaquin Railroad engine under the California Highway 99 Overpass at Goshen.

View of the Visalia Airport.

JD Heskall Locomotive in Tulare after we had paused to let a northbound Union Pacific freight run around us via the Tulare siding.

View of some new friends in the Lounge Car on the Coast Starlight.

Two views that caught our eyes where these plastic covered vineyards.

There was UP power for locals at Famosa.

We took this curve that took us southeast towards Bakersfield.

Saco where once upon a time the Tank Train was loaded here.

Nearing Bakersfield the foothills came into view.

Our train crossed the Kern River.

An old warehouse once served by rail. They announced that during the crew change in Bakersfield that we could get off the train for a Fresh Air Break. I did to get some pictures in Bakersfield.

Two views of the Bakersfield Southern Pacific Station.

Leaving Bakersfield after that nice fresh air stop.

A UP engine in the fuel pads in Bakersfield.

The old Southern Pacific Turntable in the UP Bakersfield Yard.

San Joaquin Railroad power in the UP Bakersfield Yard.

Kern Jct where my new mileage ended. I had ridden between Barstow and Bakersfield behind the Santa Fe 3751 in December of 1991.

The train ran by the Orange trees as we get closer to the Tehachapi Mountains.

Our train went by the packing Houses in Edison.

Our train ran by more Orange groves.

Those mountains are getting closer as we move eastward.

More Orange groves as we approached Sandcut.

The view after coming through Sandcut. I moved from my room to the rear door of the train.

The train was crossing Caliente Creek.

At Ilmon we had a westbound Union Pacific Freight waiting for us to clear.

Two views looking to the south of our train.

Still passing that UP freight train.

A look at the trees and Caliente Creek.

The rear DPU on that Union Pacific freight train.

The Coast Starlight took one of the many curves in what I call "The Narrows" section of this amazing rail route across the Tehachapi Mountains.

Two of the many curves on this railroad.

Our train was running along Caliente Creek.

A pair of views looking back down the tracks.

The view looking south at the tracks we would be on in a few minutes.

The train was almost to Caliente.

The Coast Starlight has reached Caliente and will soon reverse directions and really start to climb the grade.
