Amtrak Private Car # -

This fascinating
prewar, lightweight Sleeping-Buffet-Lounge-Observation car contained 2
double bedrooms, 1 compartment and 1 drawing room. Pullman Standard
built the car specifically for exhibit at the 1939 New York World's
Fair. A nationwide contest was held to name the car, with American
Milemaster being chosen. After showing the quality of Pullman
craftsmanship at the World's Fair, the car was assigned to the short-lived
Rock Island-Southern Pacific winter only, Chicago-Phoenix Arizona
Limited. Southern Pacific removed the name in 1941 when it
acquired the car, now SP No. 400, for its all-Pullman luxury over- night
San Francisco-Sacramento-Los Angeles Lark, the car being assigned to
Sacramento-Los Angeles operation. The car was renumbered No. 9500 in
1949. Its observation end was squared off to permit mid-train
operation in 1957. The rooms were all designated double bedrooms at
the time. No. 9500 served as a 4 double bedroom-buffet-lounge car on
The Lark until the 1960's. Southern Pacific sold the car to EMD for
use as a Locomotive Test Car, No. ET800, in 1965. After 20 years
with EMD, Conrail acquired the car in February, 1985, ,converting it to a
Surface Analyzer Car, No. 22. Remember to ask for my permission if you intend to
