Conrail Caboose

For HO Scale modeler's here is a collection of Conrail Cabooses.  More to come!

CR18369.jpg (253590 bytes)
Conrail 18369: Class N9E. These cabooses were used in local & yard service. The large platforms allowed plenty of room for crew members to stand while switching moves were being performed. The model is actually a Custom Brass N6A, but the N6A,N9,N9E,& N11 classes were all very similar.
CR19674.jpg (243957 bytes)
Conrail 19674: Class N3A. An ex- Erie Lackawanna caboose, the caboose features window screening as a measure against rocks thrown at the caboose. The model is from Overland
CR21106.JPG (199967 bytes)
Conrail 21106: Class N7D. An ex- Erie Lackawanna caboose which features a large bay window. The model is a Walther's kit which has had one window "plated" over then was painted to match prototype photos.

CR21153.JPG (181124 bytes)
Conrail 21153: Class N7E. inherited from the Erie Lackawanna, when these were repainted several received the large logo, stretching the length of the car. This entire class of 20 was retired by 1984. The model is a Walther's kit which was painted to match prototype photos.
CR22000.jpg (225616 bytes)
Conrail 22200: Class N8D. Originally constructed by the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western these cabooses were then transferred to the Erie Lackawanna & then to Conrail. These cars were built on retired steam tender frames, this giving the thick sidesill.

CR22137.jpg (260346 bytes)
Conrail 22137: Class N20. Received from the Reading Railroad, this caboose was the only one I know of to receive the "Conrail Quality" treatment complete with the "Continuous Quality Improvement" logo. Assigned to the Philadelphia Division the caboose spent most of it's later years based in Linden NJ, working in local service.

CR23671.JPG (246972 bytes)
Conrail 23671: Class N8A. Originally a New Haven caboose, this caboose came to Conrail via Penn Central. The cupola windows were plated over & the car was given a small bay window. The model is by Overland.
CR24530PD.JPG (240599 bytes)
Conrail 24530: Class N12. This caboose was assigned to the Conrail Police Department & often accompanied military shipments. The model is a kitbashed Walther's caboose.

CR24533ShovingPlatform.JPG (264619 bytes)
Conrail 24533: Class N12. This caboose spent its final time in service as a "shoving platform" in northern New Jersey. All the windows & doors were plated over with steel leaving only the end platforms for crewmembers to use. Beginning with a Walther's caboose kit, all the plating was done with .010 styrene sheet then the model was painted & lettered to match a photograph taken in Metuchen, NJ in 1998.

CR23065Brown.JPG (216134 bytes)
Conrail 23065: Class N5C. One of a handful of cabooses that were painted brown & used in PP&L coal train service. This practice began with Penn Central & carried over into Conrail.
CR21303Red.jpg (232381 bytes)
Conrail 21303: Although technically not a Conrail caboose since it is now owned by Norfolk Southern Ry. this caboose is assigned to Conrail Shared Assets & operates in Manville, NJ. This is one of a handful of cabooses that were painted red & received Conrail markings. Note the differences in the logotype on this car as opposed to standard Conrail cabooses.
CR46142MW.JPG (237454 bytes)
Conrail 46142: Class N5, this caboose is has been painted grey & assigned to Maintenance of Way service. Cabooses assigned to MW service also were lettered into the MW numbering scheme, thus giving it the high number. The model is a stock Bowser kit, however SMP has decals available in their Conrail Multipak that includes both the standard & MW cabooses.

CR24534CH61.jpg (237007 bytes)
Conrail 24534: Class N12: Although a rarity, occasionally a caboose would be lettered for the terminal it was assigned to. This was painted from a photograph I took at the Juniata shops in the mid 1990's. Anyone know what the CH61 stands for?
CR21596N7A.jpg (224238 bytes)
Conrail 21596: Class N7A. The N7A class came from Penn Central & was one of the cabooses with the small bay window. Model by Overland. Painted by M.Snell.
CR46111R.jpg (205961 bytes)
N3 caboose: Cabooses painted in gray with black lettering were assigned to MW service. This model was built using a JJL Models resin kit. For more information on constructing this caboose see the article at the Conrail Modelers Resource Yahoo Group. Built by M.Snell.
