GP7u's 1500-1511 were rebuilt from GP7's in the 8409-8425 group between 1980 and 1984. GP9u's 1512-1690 were set aside in 1980 for a remanufacturing program for 179 of the 185 GP9's in the 8400, 8500, 8600, 8700, and 8800 series. Units #8492, #8518, #8530, #8615, and #8619 were remanufactured in the late 70's and were renumbered to #8200-8204. GP9 8524 was retired after a wreck in 1971, while #8522 was retired after a wreck in 1984.

Roadnumbers #1691-1705 were set aside for the remanufacturing of GP9's 8825-8839. In 1987, 6 ex-TH&B GP7's (#72-77) and three GP9's (401-403) were added to the remanufacturing program. These 9 units emerged between 1987 and 1988 as #1682-1690. These units received engine blocks from retired FP9A units.

Starting in 1988, the 45 remaining unrebuilt GP9's were remanufactured as road switchers rather than yard switchers, and renumbered to #8205-8249.
