The first unit of the 8000 series, Baldwin-built DRS 4-4-1000 #8000, was the first diesel road unit on CP. This Baldwin DRS 4-4-1000 model had a 6-606SC 6-cylinder, turbocharged engine rated at 1000 Hp. Originally, the units were initially painted in Maroon and Yellow, but were soon repainted in the Maroon & Grey paint scheme. Units #8013-8046 were MLW built RS-23 units, fitted with a 6-cylinder 251 engine block rated at 1000 Hp.
