REEFER REPLACEMENT ROOF BY PIETER ROOS

The price is $26.00 U.S each, plus $5.50 shipping for up to five roofs.Contact Pieter at: pieter_roos@yahoo.com OR call him at 860-450-1870.
The roof models a Hutchins Co. flexible steel roof used on cars of Fruit Grower's Express (FGEX), Western Fruit Express (WFEX), Burlington Refrigerator Express (BREX) and National Car Company (NATX) starting in 1938. It appears that most if not all cars of those companies (except some BREX cars) where converted to these new roofs by the end of WWII or shortly after, and continued in use with them until retired as late as the 1970's. It is a metal roof, with distinctive Hutchins "ribs" and no hatch platforms. SHS offers their reefer model in these paint schemes, but with either an earlier wood board roof or a Murphy "XLa" design metal roof with flat battens and wood hatch platforms. Since the FGEX roofs are quite distinctive, I contracted with Jim King of Smoky Mountain Model Works to develop a replacement for the SHS roof to more correctly model these common cars (the four related companies had the 3rd largest reefer fleet in the 1940's and 50s after Pacific Fruit Express and SFRD). The FGEX related companies served 22 railroads through out the eastern, southern and north-western U.S., including the New Haven. The roof can also be used for scratch built cars or the old Kinsman "Matheison Dry Ice" car, which was owned by National Car and should have this roof! Since the roof is one of the most visible parts of most model cars, a few reefers fitted with this roof will really stand out from the rest of the cars on the layout. The roofs are resin castings with a replacement roof walk and separate hatch rests. They will come with directions including some historical notes. The cost is $26 per roof, plus shipping. I will also have some decals for FGEX available, probably for $6 per car. I figure shipping at $5.50 for up to 10 roofs. I've attached a photo of the real roof from Ted
Culotta's "Prototype Railroad Modeling, Vol 2", and of the
master Jim produced. I now have the 100 ordered roof castings in hand
and as soon as I finish the instructions, will begin mailing them out
to those who ordered based on the Yahoo S Scale list postings. There
are roofs still available at this time. If you look t the photos, you
will see that this would not be an easy roof to build yourself. With
the castings, you just need to do a bit of clean up of some flash on
the six parts, paint them and attach them to the car. |
