This John Fravert photo is the only I've ever seen of one of the "test schemes" before any official CSX scheme was adopted.
|
Immediately after it was delivered, the Huntington, WV shops repainted CW40-8 7812 to pull the POTUS (President of the United States) special for President George Bush.

|
1992
 |
After the presidential duties were complete, the 1992 was renumbered back to 7812, but still wore the American flag paint until finally being repainted into the standard CSX scheme in 1999.

Painted by the Cumberland, MD shops during the Chessie era, this switcher served as the Cumberland shop switcher until its retirement. During that time it wore several different slogans on the cab.
|
When the current CSX scheme was introduced, the first two switchers painted had the scheme applied "backwards".

Unit 1129 was returned when it's lease expired still in this scheme, while 1171 managed to receive a new coat of standard switcher paint.

A few switchers in pre-CSX schemes received modified paint schemes or repainted patches, but not many (if any) others received this version.

When the Huntington, WV shops needed a load test unit, they looked to former SD45-2 8969. It briefly wore this scheme with no number or lettering.

The Huntington shops then renumbered the unit HLS1, and modified the paint scheme to this one of a kind design.

As Chessie units were being renumbered into their CSX slots, a power shortage sent a handful of units back on the road before new numberboards could be installed.

Another example of this identity crisis is CSX 6084/B&O 4185.

GE delivered 3 CW60 AC units with this special "Diversity in Motion" lettering. These three units marked the end of the 600 (699) series and the beginning of the 5000 (5000-5001) series.

This shows the problem associated with stick-on numbers as opposed to painted-on numbers!

RDMT 2304 wears a special banner reading Live Injury Free Everyday - Jacksonville Service Lane. This banner was applied to at least a couple regularily assigned units to the JSL.

As seen here, another regular along the Jacksonville Service Lane was B30-7 5571.

Even though this C30-7 already had a yellow nose, it was given a new YN2 wrap around style yellow nose, along with thicker yellow side stripes.

As part of the corporate restructuring, the B&O and WM railroads were merged into the C&O as CSX took shape. This former B&O locomotive
is the only I know of to have it's sublettering changed to "C&O". Right after this units began to be stenciled "CSXT".
