Hot Cars !!

These riders look hot and tired! They're sweating in a "hot car"

The Council has received a number of complaints again this summer about poor or broken air conditioning on Metro-North.

We have addressed this issue with the railroad and have been told that, since June,  90 - 95% of all cars have HVAC in working order.  The many complaints we’ve received in recent months make us skeptical of those figures.

We would like your help in tracking this problem. If you are on a Metro-North train and feel that the AC is not working properly, please...

1.      Ask the conductor to report the problem to Maintenance, in writing.

2.      Please call the MTA complaint office at 212-672-1290, or…

3.      Please also call in a report to 1-800-RAIL-HOT, or…

4.      Follow this link:  http://mta-nyc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/mta_nyc.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php

5.      Please copy the Council on your complaint by e-mail.

Each report should contain the following:

  1. The car number (found above the door, at the front & end of and on the outside of each car)
  2. The train number (found in the timetable or from the conductor)
  3. The date and time of the "hot car" incident
  4. Any feedback from the conductor to your complaint, such as "this is an old car and they never work" or "this is our special sauna car"

You can also submit a written complaint with the above information. Address it to:

If you complain in writing, please keep a copy of your complaint and always ask for a written response.

With your help we can show the railroad that this is a serious problem requiring their attention. Please watch this site for updates on the "Project Hot Cars".
