Ukiah
Eureka Sears Point Santa Rosa |
D. Furtado (4/02) |
Photo by Tom Porter. (1999) |
This is the last fully intact wigwag left on the Northwestern
Pacific.
It is located just north of Ukiah (Presswood), at the
end of Hollow Tree Lane.
This wigwag may have seen it's last train. The NWP is
shut down
right now, and this signal may be replaced by the time
they're up and
running again. I also heard that this signal is supposed
to go to a musem.
Get pictures while you can, trains or no trains.
It
was located on the NWP in Eureka at the private crossing into the Chevron
distributor at 3401 Christie,
just southwest of Bayshore Mall.
It's on the main line about 2 miles south of Eureka yard.
Somehow somebody managed to yank
the banner off, leaving behind the pole and light housing.
More pictures of this one on "partial wigwags" page.

Another unfortunate recent upgrade occurred here at Sears Point (between Ignacio and Vallejo) on the Northwestern Pacific.Abovewe see the original signal on a private road leading to a few farm houses. Highway 37 runs just to the left of this photo. I'm guessing that this was Highway 37 before it was widened to 4 lanes many years ago, which means that this signal has been in the same place since the late '20's or '30's. |
| Now... | |
| As you will see in the photo to the right, the wigwag was removed (early '99) and replaced by two highway flashers. You can also see Highway 37 to the left. The last time I witnessed a NWP freight crossing this spot, the wigwag never budged! The NWP has since been forced to upgrade nearly every crossing on the line as part of a multi phase program to comply with FRA standards. As of this writing (4/00) no trains run on NWP tracks. Extensive track repairs are underway as well. More info on this can be found at the NCRY site. |
Santa Rosa once had its share of wigwags. This photo was
recently sent in by Dan Graves of
the wigwag that stood about a block from the depot in
Santa Rosa. This appears to
be 6th St. Photo taken in 1994 and the wigwag was removed
within a few years of this date.
