MILW/GN FP45/F45 units in N Scale

GN F45 from the Lima FP45

[Part III]

After picking the best mold I continued on to fitting it to the Kato SD45 chassis.. well guess what?? I don't know how, but my model is a scale 1.5' too short! DOOP! Uggghh.. oh well, I'll make this one fit then I'll rebuild my master to be the correct length. Don't ask how THAT happened. Perhaps I'll stop drinking wine while working on my models.

I chose to detail the front end more than the back end, using guitar string to build the front handrails. I used GMM stanchions and brass wire to make the handrails on the front and back porch. Then I installed GMM steps along the bottom and wire handrails to each door on the sides of the unit.

As you can see, I decided on the GN Big Sky Blue paint scheme. The hobby shop was out of GN Big Sky Blue paint so I started with Modelflex D&H blue and toned it down using reefer white, comparing swatches to photos as I mixed. All in all, I think the color turned out quite well. I decided not to decal the stripe on this unit since the Lima shell has such exaggerated details. The decal simply would not settle in a way that would look smooth. So, I masked the white, painting the unit white first, then the black on the roof, and finally blue. Decals are my own printed on my Alps MD1000.

I think my next unit will be BN Green and black.. much simpler masking!
