Milwaukee Road 261 to Wisconsin Dells "Route of the Hiawathas" ~ June 24th, 2006

by Elizabeth Guenzler

This trip was originally going to be my first steam excursion chase but it became my second time riding behind Milwaukee Road 261. Rather than fly from Victoria to Seattle, I decided this time to take the Clipper catamaran instead and Bob picked me up. The next day, we flew to Milwaukee via St. Louis and retrieved the rental car and stayed at a hotel near the airport.

Upon our arrival at Milwaukee Union Station (before Amtrak and other transportation servics moved to the Milwaukee Intermodal Station in 2007), we asked if there were any tickets available. It was almost sold out but there were two coach seats left. We bought these then started to take photographs before boarding.

We popped into the station and found this painting of the original Milwaukee Road Milwaukee station.

Smoke from the steam engine is still visible. We had lunch at Essen Haus Restaurant then returned to the Wisconsin Dells station to wait for the train to arrive.

The engine had to go to Sturtevant to turn around.

What better way to end this travelogue, excursion and indeed the train itself, than with the unique and very special "Cedar Rapids"? We returned to the hotel, went out for dinner then flew back to Seattle the next day and I returned to Victoria Monday morning, drove home then to work.

I was very happy to have ridden behind 261 again and for me, new mileage. The Friends of 261 are a class act and each excursion is always very well-run, much enjoyment is had and fulfillment is always found.
