Holmes Bay Tramway
Holmes Bay is located on the west side of Pigeon Bay inlet near Pigeon Bay on Banks Peninsula. It was first settled in the early 1840s along with the Pigeon Bay township. Timber was milled in Holmes Bay by George Holmes, a railway contractor who built the Lyttelton railway tunnel, and his descendants, until 1886. A tramline was used to carry the timber onto a wharf for shipping. Today, various relics can still be seen including a large number of rails and remains of wharf piles, but the actual route of the tramway is not readily located. The bay foreshore is on private land and permission must be obtained to visit it.
