KMZ Placemarkers Legend
This is a description of the legend used for Placemarkers in Google Earth KMZ files downloadable from this website. This is the latest version and some older files may use a previous version, these will be updated as time permits.
Each placemarker has a text caption, with the use of special symbols, usually the first character indicating what is marked. The following is the list of symbols used and their meanings.
{} | Curly braces around text indicate that the position of the placeholder is inaccurate or could not be accurately determined. This is frequently the case with closed stations which are not marked on recent maps. |
* | Railway station |
! | Point of interest (not necessarily rail related) |
# | Level crossing or unclassified crossing (could be a bridge or subway etc) |
][ | Bridge (railway over river or road etc) |
)( | Underpass/subway (railway below) |
>< | Tunnel (may show separate markers for each portal) |
~ | Railway siding |
+ | Route marker (where route is unclear or there is a long distance between adjacent placeholders) |
= | Boundary - where one rail line joins to another. |
^ | Rail heritage/tourism operator or museum. |
KMZ files created after 1 August 2007 may incorporate placemakers created using Google Maps. Due to representation or registration errors, these placemarkers (blue) may not be as accurately positioned as those made using Google Earth (white in a yellow circle).
Disclaimer: Whilst I have made every reasonable effort to ascertain the correct position and information about placeholders, no liability can be assumed for errors in the KMZ files provided on this site.
